89X returns?

I'm liking it so far. The play list has a nice variety and have not heard any repeats yet. Unlike when WLLZ started, I think they only know 60 songs. I hope they can do well and stick around for awhile.

That's a good point. Another one that popped into my head: "Low" by Cracker. I know they used to play that.

I've seen a few different people mention "The First Day of Spring" by The Gandharvas as a song they specifically think of with old 89X. Haven't heard that one.

They're doing a really great job, though. I keep being impressed this morning. I heard Porno for Pyros and the Presidents of the United States of America. A few more obscure cuts, too. "Pulp" - Common People. "Crabbuckit" by k-os, whatever that was. Just a really bizarre song. I love it. 89X always did surface obscure songs.

Alt 98.7... scanning the playlist... it's also not bad, I have to admit. I guess I hope that 89X can set themselves apart, but they've got the momentum pretty much by default now.

This is so true. 89.1 out of Cousino HS also played it before anyone else just like 89X.

Funny memory, but I remember a kid destroying his Presidents cd in 1997 when they broke up in the locker next to mine.

That was the joy of living on the east side. American radio never touched most of this unless it was a top 5 chart hit. Alt only plays Fat Lip by Sum 41. None of their other stuff. Alt is basically AOR with less guitar solos.

Tonight, after the "Another 89X Original" tag: "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley. Just as a reminder to us that 89X would play everything. I think that's pretty cool. I don't specifically remember that song on 89X before it was everywhere else, but I'm sure it was.

I've decided that "Another 89X Original" refers to a track that 89X helped to popularize in the Detroit/Windsor area. The big songs that they played first. That tends to be 80s "classic alternative" or early 90s tracks, but it can also be Outcast or Gnarls Barkley. I guess it's more concise than "you heard it first on 89X."

Also heard another track tonight that I had forgotten was a constant on 89X: "I Hear You Calling" by Gob. More of that great Cancon. I love the Cancon! It's what made 89X unique. And I really like a lot of those tracks. I heard The Arkells "Oh, The Boss Is Coming!" this evening and that song is great. Mega, I had forgotten all about Bif Naked, too!

You know who they haven't played? Avril Lavigne. A bridge too far now? I was honestly surprised when they played "Complicated" when it first came out, but they did.

I suspect WDVD would've been the second local station to play the song. 2006 was around the time WDVD was reaching its stride. Best Adult CHR in America until Cumulus wrecked the station. Citadel took surprisingly good care of it.

89x was also one of the first detroit stations to have RDS iirc in 2003, I remember hearing Atari's boys of summer on there and sloan the rest of my life
