Re: 89X returns?
What makes me anxious is the fact Bell Media is a crappy operator.CD 94.7 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 22, 2025 10:15 amThis could be a smoke screen and they are doing this to do a soft re-launch of country or another format. Although, if so likely yeah it would be like faux wheels but maybe a tad better. The night 89x stole Xmas and stuff like that wouldn't return and no hosts that really made the station what it was.BFSEsq wrote: ↑Thu Aug 21, 2025 9:21 pm If this happens, it would be big. Hard to believe, but it's also hard to argue with sites with such good track records. I'm excited just because it would be fun to actually have two competing alt rock stations again.
I will say this: it will be 89X in name only. I mean, what else really would make it the same station? IMO there's zero chance of any of the jocks coming back. It's hard because we tend to get nostalgic for the good days, but what prevents this from being 2019 89X again, a shell of its former self with almost no local talent that anyone cares about?
It will be better than Fake Wheels, though. I think just because of the recency of it actually going away. 2020 wasn't that long ago. People will be interested. It's hard to imagine with the modern state of radio, but it might actually generate some buzz.
Instagram advertised a local company selling 89X retro t-shirts to me just yesterday. The old-school logo, with "The Cutting Edge" slogan. It's the most I've ever actually thought about a sponsored post. So yeah, I'd listen to it.
Realistically, could this happen? Bell gave up on Detroit. It would be a big move for them to reverse all of it. I mean, I'd imagine there's no chance of them actually investing any money or anything![]()
Wheels on 98.7 and as of now the defunct 89x, where shells of their former selves when they went off the air. I'm reminded of what Opie and Anthony said when they signed on WNEW 102.7's talk format in 1999, they talked about how WNEW's rock format was actually dead for years and the funeral came a bit late.
This is how I felt when 89x went off, yeah, I was kind of sad a little but by the 2010s, it was not the station I grew up with. If X were to come back, I am not sure how successful it would be.
If they have the keys, I have ZERO confidence that any relaunch will result in an impressive product.

Re: 89X returns?
I'll believe it when I see it.
Bell over the last few years has chosen to use homogeneous branding for different formats like Pure Country or Virgin Radio, so I'm not sure if they'd use a local branding again.
I too don't think it would be the 89x that we loved for decades. It would likely be cheaper to run with minimal to no local personalities and none of the promotions or concerts that made 89x iconic. I'm not expecting anything special.

OHM FM sort of filled the gap WLBS left, I think Laser was after that. It was more akin to a British ac station.

Not a chance of that happening.

Re: 89X returns?
McKenzie should be banned from mornings, his sidekick should be banned from on-air work at any rock station, and Kim Scott is fucking terrible as an on-air personality.
These people helped drive the station off a cliff.

Re: 89X returns?
I don't know if I can buy this one. Bell wants to cut and roll out national formats, not one of which is rock flavored at all. They blew 89x out for a reason. And I just can't see why bringing it back in any form, unless they've found a way to save/make more money with it.
Plus, there's the CRTC and format changes are expensive. This may be a wet dream..

Re: 89X returns?
I wish Bell flipped either 88.7 or 93.9 to Bounce, which is Bell's Variety Hits network. It would at least would have had a similar playlist somewhat to the River if Bell was going to get rid of localized branded stations anyway.

89X returns?
Good luck with that… The River fell off a cliff musically before they pulled the plug. Couldn’t stand to listen to it for more than 10 minutes when they were playing JT or Shawn Mendes. Those types of artists don’t flow well with Nirvana, Bob Marley, Talking Heads, etc. unless you’re calling yourself Jack or Bob.Rich S wrote:Maybe the River could come back too????
