Brighton can pick up most of the Detroit stations a lot more easily than Howell.

In my current car, it amazes me how quickly so many Detroit stations' signals turn to shit once I reach Pinckney Road. I could always keep clear reception on most of them to Highland Rd or a bit beyond in prior vehicles. 97.1 when broadcasting at full power would often remain comfortably listenable to Williamston.

Fords definitely have better FM reception on OEM gear than Hondas.

The crazy thing, though, is I get 98 KCQ from Saginaw crystal clear most of the time in the eastern half of Ionia County. WGRD, only 35 miles away, often comes in like shit in the same area.

I have to say, just scanning that playlist, that is probably the most bizarre radio playlist I've ever seen. Not in a bad way! Seems like a decent station. But I've never quite seen a format like that.

Econoline Crush! I've only heard that band on two other radio stations ever with my own ears. One was the long defunct 95.1/100.7 The Rock from SW Ontario. The other, believe it or not, was WKLQ in Grand Rapids during the late 90s. WKLQ, especially during its very short lived Rock Alternative run, played a noticeable amount of CanCon. I suspect one or more folks were keeping tabs on what 89X was playing. Moist, Big Wreck and The Tragically Hip all received airplay on KLQ. Our Lady Peace, of course, received plenty of airplay. Starseed was a big hit, but KLQ in '97 and perhaps '98 also played Superman's Dead regularly.

Pretty cool. Meanwhile, looking through the 89X playlist, it looks like for the most part I've now seen everything they're playing. I'm not seeing anything I didn't see before. So that's practically it for the playlist. Is anyone else just a BIT disappointed? I feel like there's so much you can do in this first week or so, even if they dialed it back after that, but it seems like we have a pretty standard size playlist, nothing too extensive. Maybe that's just radio. I guess I shouldn't expect more than that.

What I really wish is that they had kept going with the vintage drops. For those first couple songs after the switch, it was cool. Eminem and then Mark Hoppus saying you heard the song first on 89X. Then... nothing. No more of those! I would kill for another one of those once in a while. I feel like they didn't make the effort there that they should have.

For being less than a week into its new run, I'm satisfied with 89X.

No alternative station is ever going to have a perfect playlist for me.

I've not seen a single Nickelback song on the log, so I give them major kudos for that. I hope they avoid that band like the plague.

Alt 98.7... scanning the playlist... it's also not bad, I have to admit. I guess I hope that 89X can set themselves apart, but they've got the momentum pretty much by default now.

I know Nickelback is cool to hate, but am I alone in liking some of their oldest stuff? Breathe, Too Bad, and Leader of Men come to mind.

"Hey Ya" by Outcast! Hahaha, that's a fun one. I can actually remember this: 89X was honestly the first station to play this song, weeks before it became mega popular.

Surprised I haven’t heard Sponge yet. Plowed would be great to hear… thought of that when it came up on my Spotify queue.

Alt 98.7 is doing an A to Z special that is not representative of their normal playlist this weekend.

Their usual playlist is not nearly as good as consists of roughly 350 songs at any given time.

Nickelback generic radio-friendly rock, but I don’t mind them as much as most people claim to. Some songs are quite cringe, like Something In Your Mouth, but most of their songs are tolerable.

Visiting family in Toledo and finally put 89X on and Hitchin’ A Ride by Green Day comes on. Haven’t heard that one in years. Fuck yeah!
