Week of 8/16
It was a close call, but I think the GFS did a better job than the Euro in forecasting last week's weather, after the Euro outperformed the GFS in each of the prior two weeks (mainly in days 5 to 7). Most days this past week, high temps were a couple or a few degrees warmer than model guidance. It was also a very humid week in southern Michigan.
After today, the next widespread rain chances appear to be Wednesday and next Sunday. Neither looks to be particularly soaking at this stage.
For this coming week, it appears high temps will be a few degrees either side of normal (80 to 82 is normal for the coming week). No 90 degree temps are within view. Might we be done with 90+ temps for the year?
My forecasted high temps for Detroit and for Grand Rapids:
8/16: 83, 83 (with oppressive humidity! Almost the entire lower peninsula has DPs of 70+ right now.)
8/17: 82, 82
8/18: 84, 82
8/19: 84, 80
8/20: 80, 80
8/21: 79, 81
8/22: 82, 81
8/23: 79, 77
GFS model run from 8AM this morning; first number is projected 5PM temp for Detroit and second number is projected 5PM temp for Grand Rapids:
8/16: 84, 84
8/17: 84, 80
8/18: 87, 80
8/19: 84, 80
8/20: 79, 77
8/21: 79, 81
8/22: 83, 79
8/23: 80, 75
Euro-AIFS (Artificial Intelligence Forecasting System) model run from 8PM last night; first number is projected 2PM temp for Detroit and second number is projected 2PM temp for Grand Rapids (I was unable to obtain 5PM data from this source):
8/16: 79, 83
8/17: 78, 79
8/18: 82, 81
8/19: 82, 80
8/20: 78, 81
8/21: 75, 82
8/22: 80, 80
8/23: 74, 78

Re: Week of 8/16
The northern half of the metro received decent rainfall today; some areas got a soaking rain. I received 0.4" of an inch.
Parts of western Wayne County and downriver received little to zero rain today.
The very heavy, organized activity as has so often been the case this summer stayed in Ohio. The upper air pattern is to blame. We just haven't had the instability in lower Michigan that areas just to our south and southwest have witnessed repeatedly. That isn't necessarily a bad thing for us; this has been a terrible severe weather season for much of the Chicago metro.

I got caught in a downpour in Sterling Heights, but upon returning to Canton, it was bone dry.MWmetalhead wrote: ↑Sun Aug 16, 2026 4:35 pmThe northern half of the metro received decent rainfall today; some areas got a soaking rain. I received 0.4" of an inch.

in Warren, it rained at 6 AM yesterday. Definitely not in the evening. I was visiting my parents and it was muggy yet no rain.MegaHertz wrote: ↑Sun Aug 16, 2026 6:34 pmI got caught in a downpour in Sterling Heights, but upon returning to Canton, it was bone dry.MWmetalhead wrote: ↑Sun Aug 16, 2026 4:35 pmThe northern half of the metro received decent rainfall today; some areas got a soaking rain. Whatever this batch of rain is supposed to give us it’s at a Flint to Jackson line right now and disappearing fast. Can’t get a drop of rain.

Indeed, no measurable rain fell at my house last night. Bummer.

Re: Week of 8/16
I'd like to go back to my predictions and see just how fucking WRONG I was. A handful of 90 degree days? Wet and cool this summer? I suck.
