Detroit Tigers 2025
Re: Detroit Tigers 2025
I’m convinced Hinch cannot go all the way without trash cans and buzzers. He won’t be fired, but it should seriously be considered.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2025
Although a different manager might've posted a significantly better record in August & September, I have serious doubts the Tigers would've been able to make it to the ALCS.

They gotta be willing to trade some higher shelf prospects this off season. Win now.

So the ALCS matches up the two expansion teams from 1977—Seattle and Toronto.
In the expansion draft, the Tigers lost these five immortals to these two teams—Dan Meyer, Frank MacCormack, Dennis DeBarr, Dave Lemanczyk, and Bill Laxton.

In 2003, I went to Comerica Park to see Roger Clemens go for his 300th victory. I ended up staying 17 innings to see the Yankees win 10-9.MWmetalhead wrote: ↑Sat Oct 11, 2025 6:32 amThere was a game against the Jays in 2014 that went at least 15, I think.

As bad as Kahnle was post-June, the Tigers are not in the postseason without that free agent signing.MotorCityRadioFreak wrote: ↑Sat Oct 11, 2025 1:01 am Tommy Maeda…well, it’s been fun, but this can’t end well.

It probably is in the back of Scott Harris's mind. Every GM wants to hire their own manager, sooner or later, for better or worse. Hinch and Harris have probably had their share of arguments with each other. Hinch has had front office experience and has probably had more front office-type opinions than somebody like Sparky Anderson or Jim Leyland.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2025
I have no big problem with Hinch and his decisions. Firstly, it's obvious the team has great chemistry and the players WANT to play for him. I can't stress the importance of this enough. Think of the likes of Matt Millen or Matt Patricia as the antithesis. Perhaps the relative youth of the team has much to do with this, but the resurgence of Javy Báez and his willingness to play anywhere and bat at the bottom of the order to help the team is also a testament.
Secondly, Hinch's embrace of probabilities in his in-game decisions put him at the forefront of the modern game. This may often frustrate "old school" fans such as myself, but it's also seen in his putting certain players in certain situations against certain opposing players; i.e., he knows his players' strengths and weaknesses.
At the beginning of the season I never would have expected us to build such a commanding lead in the division looking at the team on paper. I tended to favor Cleveland, but they had their own problems.
To those suggesting Skubal should have started the seventh inning, it's hard to argue against it, but you could see how he spent his bullets in striking out THIRTEEN batters over a mere six innings. Who knows what he had left to spend?

And that's why I don't think Harris is committed to the Tigers' future with the likes of Greene & Torkelson. They may be the equivalent of Jason Thompson & Steve Kemp, players who contributed to the return of winning baseball, but weren't going to be a part of a future championship team.Bobbertt wrote: ↑Sat Oct 11, 2025 9:37 am It probably is in the back of Scott Harris's mind. Yeah, after finally turning to Google, I found that the answer to my latter question was "not even close".MWmetalhead wrote: ↑Sat Oct 11, 2025 6:32 amThere was a game against the Jays in 2014 that went at least 15, I think.
Though it...possibly had been a minute since the Tigers last went for as many as 15?

The game I remembered occurred in August 2014, it was indeed against the Blue Jays, and that one went 19 innings.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2025
A good analogy! As to trading Skubal, I was thinking along the lines of Dombrowski trading Jeff Weaver, a homegrown starting pitcher who symbolized the team's youthful resurgence from ignominy and whom Al Kaline compared to Jim Bunning, for three highly regarded but unproven youngsters including Jeremy Bonderman. Another of the three, Carlos Peña, showed power and defensive chops at 1B, but struck out too much. Sound familiar? He went on to eventual success elsewhere.Momo wrote: ↑Sat Oct 11, 2025 9:44 amAnd that's why I don't think Harris is committed to the Tigers' future with the likes of Greene & Torkelson. Like Jason Thompson & Steve Kemp, Greene & Torkelson have not brought the Tigers to an ALCS.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2025
During the first half of the season I recall praising Tork for his clutch hitting, something we hadn't seen before. He ended up with less than eighty RBIs despite playing every day in the middle of the order. Either teams were beginning to exploit his weaknesses or he fell in love with his power stroke at the plate -- probably both. I was hoping the Greene/Tork combo would develop into the next Cabrera/Fielder.
Granted, the pitching around MLB has gotten a lot better. Note how last night Seattle pitchers relied so much on breaking pitches and avoided fastballs for the most part. Pitch recognition is a talent for which it seems we haven't mastered yet.
