Which song from Kraftwerk? The only album that got any airplay dropped in 1977. 89X wouldn't have played Talking Heads from '77.

It's alternative, isn't it? If they start playing shit like REO Speedwagon, then we can talk. Frankly, it's nice to go off the beaten path once in a great while. Not like they're a core artist.

I will say "Crazy" is the single from him that would seem least out of place.

He was modern rock prior to Crazy breaking out.

It still fits within the format, IMO.

Wow, sampling some of the songs on that chart (quite a few which I've never heard of), I gotta say that mainstream rock music of that era SUCKED. I can see why grunge soared in popularity shortly thereafter.

Album Oriented Rock radio in the late 70s and very early 80s was also brutally bad, based on materials I've reviewed over the years. A lot of crappy sissy music.

I do not like most hair metal, but the rise of that subgenre helped ruin the AOR format, so for that, I'm grateful. Some say the disappearance of Album Oriented Rock as a format and splintering into classic rock, modern rock, active rock, and mainstream rock was a tragedy. I say it was a thing of beauty.

1991 was a very.....weird....year in music. It was kind of like a catch bin. A lot of the 80s trends like hair metal and AC/pop were on their way out, and it seemed like anything could be a hit.

While most mainstream rock did indeed suck in 1991 (1990 wasn't any great shakes, either), veteran artists had some great albums that year, including Alice Cooper, Van Halen, Ozzy, John Mellencamp and Tom Petty. Let's also not forget Metallica, Soundgarden and RHCP. By the mid 90s, we had a lot of "me, too" bands, which weren't all bad, but by 97/98, it was in the same place hair metal was in 1991.

I find it hilarious that 3 little pigs by green jelly was a rock top 40 hit that year or 93, i think 92-93 was the strangest years of music IMO

By 95-96 you had tired late stage grunge like Bush and Silverchair sharing the charts with the Alanis/Jewel/Sheryl Crow feminist rock and MTV being so confused they had Tabitha Soren profiling Wesley Willis on The Week In Rock in case HE became the next big thing.

Seal was mid 90s, my friend. The folks you mentioned didn’t hit popularity until 2000 and after.

It got weirder yet as the 90s went on. By 95-96 you had tired late stage grunge like Bush and Silverchair sharing the charts with the Alanis/Jewel/Sheryl Crow feminist rock and MTV being so confused they had Tabitha Soren profiling Wesley Willis on The Week In Rock in case HE became the next big thing.

And then modern AC hit the scene, stole all the "lighter side of alternative" artists like the ones mentioned above, and that's how alternative became an active rock hybrid playing Kid Rock and Limp Bizkit.

We didn't have a true CHR here for a long time. 95.5 was close as a Hot AC mix, but 96.3 was basically top 40 for alternative.
