We have bussing here with thousands of kids in my school district. Plus not everyone can afford a dual 4x4 truck like up there. It's also too dangerous for kids to walk due to the way people drive here. Many side streets are narrow as well.
Our district has 10,000 students spread across 55 miles of rural unplowed roads. We only cancel for white outs. And we don't all have rollin coal Trumpmobiles.
Never underestimate the power of a Subaru with a Coexist bumper sticker.
Keep up son, these days it's a RAV4 with an M22 sticker with some old suburbanite transplant on board. We're being invaded by retirees.
Ah dang. Yes, of course. I forgot about the locals who have a license plate frame that reads "Suburban Toyota of Farmington Hills".

More likely, New Jersey or New York plate. We don't get many Michigan transplants.

Just woke up to a half a foot of snow on the ground that wasn't predicted so much as a flake when I went to sleep last night. That is on top of what is coming later.

Radar loop says it all - a super narrow lake effect band came in off of Lake Huron, couldn't have been but a 10-mile wide area that got this. It strangely held together and trekked west across the state.

Light flurries started at about 2:47pm in Sterling Heights. Cement is now all covered in white.

3 to 6 inches will probably be a common range across Metro Detroit, with downriver areas being a likely exception (where 2 or 3 inches are likely, with less than that possible in Monroe). Areas near and north of I-69 and near and east of I-75 and stretching eastward along and north of 402 in Ontario will likely see 5 to 8.

The system on Saturday into early Sunday warrants careful monitoring. That one has the potential to dump a half foot across much of the area, but still too soon to zero in on specific accumulations.

We will end up with 6-8 in 24 hours. Not a horrible day.

The snow subsided at my place over an hour ago and has flipped to light freezing drizzle. Initially, a little sleet was mixing with the snow here.

Looks like the heaviest snow right now (5:30p) is over Kalamazoo and areas just west and north of Lansing extending to Owosso. Coldwater appears to be getting a healthy dose of freezing rain or sleet.

There is a pocket of dry air over SE Michigan at the moment. It will be interesting to see how long that holds.

Had about 2” fall in two hours here near Grand Rapids. Was a bit wet and heavy, but easy enough to shovel.

Between 4.5 and 5 fell at my place, which was in line with most forecasts. Consensus seemed to be for 4 to 6 inches in southern Oakland County.

Shoveled another 3-4" from what fell overnight. It was a bit less wet than yesterday afternoon's snowfall, so it wasn't a terribly bad cardio session! :)

Kicked off the snowblower to handle about 5"-6" this morning. Hopefully the current sunshine will handle much of the residual snowcovering.

Gotta love solar radiation taking care of the dusting of snow! :)

We've had lake effect all day, good for another 3-5" today.
