Buttigieg, as an Indiana resident up until a few years ago has little chance at anything except US Congressional District 1 occupied by a Militia Industrial Complex patsy from Mississippi.

Buttigieg eyes U.S. Senate bid; Whitmer says she won’t run

LANSING — Former U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg of Traverse City is considering a bid for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat in 2026, two sources close to him said Tuesday, after U.S. Sen. Gary Peters, D-Bloomfield Township, abruptly announced he won’t seek re-election.

Buttigieg, 43, a former presidential candidate who’s viewed as a rising star by many in Democratic politics, had been floated as a potential candidate for governor next year.

But the Peters’ decision had provided him — and many other Michigan politicians — a new career opportunity to weigh.

The two sources who declined to be identified because they weren’t authorized to speak publicly about Buttigieg’s deliberations said he is now actively exploring a Senate bid in 2026.

Multiple Michigan Democrats had identified Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who can’t seek re-election as governor in 2026 because of term limits, and Buttigieg as the top potential Democratic contenders for the Peters seat.

However, a spokeswoman for Whitmer’s Fight Like Hell political action committee released Tuesday morning a statement that said Whitmer “is not running for this seat in the Senate.”

But Buttigieg is “quite likely to run for the Senate,” predicted Adrian Hemond, a Democrat and a political consultant who runs the Lansingbased firm Grassroots Midwest.

“This race is going to be instantly nationalized because of how close it was last year,” Hemond said. “Pete already has a national network.”

Former U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Lansing, decided not to seek re-election in 2024. Democratic leadership quickly coalesced around then-U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin of Holly as the party’s nominee. Slotkin narrowly defeated former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Brighton, by 19,006 votes, or 48.6% to 48.3%, in November.

It’s unclear if Michigan Democrats would join forces behind a potential Buttigieg campaign for the Senate as they did behind Slotkin.

I was surprised that Peters isn't running for reelection for US Senate I thought he was good even know I didn't vote for him the 2 times he ran for US Senate. He was way better than Debbie Stabenow. I hope that Dana Nessel doesn't ever run for public office again worse AG in Michigan history I'll never vote for her in a state wide race. Whitmer's eyes are on 2028 she is running for President in my opinion.

Dungy, a Jackson native who now works as an NFL analyst for NBC, extinguished the speculation about an outsider bid in a post on X Thursday night, saying he wasn't "sure where this idea came from but it didn’t come from me."

"I love my home state of Michigan," Dungy added. "I pray they will elect a senator who honors the Lord and leads the people well. But I can assure you it won’t be me. Number 1, I’m not a politician, and Number 2 I live in Florida."

Meanwhile, Rogers of White Lake Township posted on the social media that he's "strongly considering" another Senate bid, noting that he had the backing of President Donald Trump last cycle and won "millions" of votes.

"Since receiving more votes than any other Republican candidate that has ever run for Senate in Michigan, the tremendous outpouring of support and encouragement I've received since November proves that our mission to send a real fighter to the US Senate has just begun," Rogers wrote.

Living in Florida didn't stop Rogers from running last year.
