90s music on classic hits stations

Unread post by stopnswop2 »

Well it's 2024 now and the 90s were 30 years ago.
Now is the time to start adding these songs to stations (not experimenting in 2016), but alot of PD's don't seem to have any clue as to what they are doing and just add random songs with zero thought put into it.

So here is what I would do for a start. Here is a 160 song playlist that can be mixed in with the 70s and 80s music, or played on it's own in order.
I put a lot of thought into this.
Late 90s teen bop and rap/hip hop is mostly not included and should slowly be added in as the decade goes on. The few I did include I thought about pretty carefully though.

I've heard hear Third Eye Blind, Blink 182, Smash Mouth, Fountains of Wayne, among others on 103.9 The Fox in Saginaw.

Had no idea I reached that "age bracket" LOL

The Fox's sister station, 93.5 WHMI, has a '90s at 9 feature. I also have heard songs as recent as Pharrell Williams' "Happy" on that station in the past, though that was before Krol bought them and moved them into a more typical Classic Hits format.

Local Radio Networks' Classic Hits format is heard on 99.9 The Wave up north. They are still centered in the '80s but play maybe two or three '90s cuts an hour. Here's a sample:

Because the Night - 10,000 Maniacs
Opposites Attract - Paula Abdul (peaked in '90 although it debuted in '89)
All That She Wants - Ace of Base
I Don't Want to Miss a Thing - Aerosmith
Can't Stop - After 7
Baby I Love Your Way - Big Mountain
Always Be My Baby - Mariah Carey
Believe - Cher
Life Is a HIghway - Tom Cochrane
Walking in Memphis - Marc Cohn
Mr. Jones - Counting Crows
Dreams - Cranberries
Groove Is in the Heart - Deee-Lite
Enjoy the Silence - Depeche Mode
Ordinary World - Duran Duran
Every Heartbeat - Amy Grant
When I Come Around - Green Day
What Is Love - Haddaway
I Go to Extremes - Billy Joel
Right Here, Right Now - Jesus Jones
I Love You Always Forever - Donna Lewis
I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That) - Meat Loaf
Black or White - Michael Jackson
Ironic - Alanis Morissette
Don't Speak - No Doubt
How Bizarre - OMC
I'll Stand by You - Pretenders
Losing My Religion - R.E.M.
Closing Time - Semisonic
Runaway Train - Soul Asylum
Semi-Charmed Life - Third Eye Blind
Hold On - Wilson Phillips

Didn't know The Wave is mostly 80s.

When I was a kid it was 60s and early/mid-70s.

At some point they switched from the locally-programmed deep late '50s-early '70s playlist to satellite programming. If you're looking for '60s and '70s oldies in that part of the state, you want either Alpena's 105.7 WZTK or Cheboygan's 97.7 WCHY (which airs the Local Radio Networks "Superhits" format outside of the MAGA talk morning show).

WHMI is inching back into the 2010s, FWIW. I heard Katy Perry "Teenage Dream" the other day.

That's a shame it's automated now. The few times a year I get up to Cheboygan now, I typically listen to 96.3... The format has changed on WCHY so many times it's ridiculous.

I prefer the "smooth sailing" of 106.3 myself. At least they have a lot of songs you can't hear anywhere else on terrestrial radio (locally).

I thought 106.3 simulcasted with 97.7 at one time? Or was it part of "The Bear" ? I can't seem to keep up with Black Diamond's programming changes on Northern MI stations...

106.3 and 95.5 did air the same programming for a time when both had the "Easy" Soft AC format. Before that, 106.3 was right-wing talk. 106.3 went from "Easy" to "Mac-FM" in 2017 (after 95.5 had already flipped to the Rock 105 simulcast), first with a typical Classic Hits format and then in January '19 to the current Yacht Rock/Soft AC mix (and all-Christmas during the holidays).

97.7 was WWSS "Straits Country" before they adopted the current Oldies/Talk format and was also the original home for the "Easy" format later heard on 95.5/106.3. "Straits Country" was previously heard on 95.3 which is now The Bear. I know, all these programming changes get confusing!

95.3? Where is that located?

And yes, it is confusing... When I was growing up The Bear was 105.1/98.1/107.1 (then 97.9 was added at some point). 102.9 KC Country, 95.5/94.5 The Zone, and 1240 had the "Music of your Life" format.

Sorry for the delay; I just saw your reply.
95.3 (WWSS) is licensed to Tuscarora Township in Cheboygan County. Tower between Indian River and Wolverine.
I also recall when KC Country was simulcast on 107.1 Cadillac (before The Bear). Hence the call letters: WCKC - Cadillac KC.

Isn't the WWSS tower where WGFM was located ?
