Today 49 Years Ago at 2:15p

Unread post by TC Talks »

The Edmund Fitzgerald left the Tacomite docks in Superior Wisconsin headed for Zug Island Detroit. 29 hours later, 29 men perished. Most of the widows are dead and the children are approaching retirement.

I don’t think we’ve had many storms around here quite that bad in a while. I always like to hear the song when I was up close to the straits. I don’t get as far up as they were.

We did up here back in 2010. We had a nasty storm.

The Fitz was the victim of low pressure which drew water up in the middle of Lake Superior. The ship went North to avoid the storm and ran into unusually shallow water up by Michipicoten Island. The prevailing theory is that she bottomed out on the rocks and it pierced the hull and disrupted the structural integrity. By the time she was in trouble, she already had water in the bulks and was starting to break apart.

So they were doomed before they turned south is the prevailing theory… interesting.

They didn't have buoy reports like we do today. At least until Trump disables the National Weather Service...

The right needs to stop worry about what’s between people’s legs. Instead, they should focus on what’s between their ears.

I've always wondered if the Edmund Fitzgerald would still be sailing today. A few of the older freighters are still out there.

The Arthur M. Anderson is still active. Captain Bernie Cooper passed away in 1993. He was leading the Anderson that night.
