94.1 WHST now on the air
Re: 94.1 WHST now on the air
CIDR, which the FCC still lists as CKLW-FM, clears by about 10 km with no interference showing required. Luckily, the FCC has it in the database, which it still hasn't fully resolved with its Canadian Database issues.

Sure is. You might recall they operated then-WKLR with a Soul/R&B format, similar to WJLB's, and then a Disco format, prior to going Country.radioandtventhusiast wrote: ↑Mon Mar 27, 2023 12:46 pmIs that the same Booth Broadcasting that used to own K100 in Toledo prior to Cumulus owning it?ChrisWL1980 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 25, 2023 6:34 pmWBBC existed in Michigan on 1330 AM in Flint prior to 1960, and later on 94.1 FM in Jackson until maybe 1973 or '74. Both were Booth Broadcasting Company stations when they had those calls, making them both sister stations of WJLB in Detroit. Ernie Durham worked at Flint's WBBC at the same time he worked at WJLB in the late '50s and had to do a daily commute between the two cities to do his shows. Bob Eastman bought the station in 1960 and changed it to WTRX with Top 40 and later a pioneering Hot AC-type format.Mega Hertz wrote: ↑Fri Mar 10, 2023 10:32 pmOther call letters to avoid:

And the WBBC calls exist today in Blackstone, VA.
WBBW also exists in Youngstown, OH, and WSMD in Mechanicsville, MD.
After flipping to a Spanish language format in the '80s, KKHJ in L.A. was able to get the three-letter KHJ call letters back because when "KKHJ" is pronounced in Spanish, the first two letters sound out "caca."

The soul format from what I understand, never was that big of a success. Once K100 launched, everything changed. I think Booth made the right move.ChrisWL1980 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 29, 2023 10:34 pmSure is. Re: 94.1 WHST now on the air
The Alt-AC format on WTRX which began in 1968, featured more younger AC artists like Melanie and less older artists like Frank Sinatra. It wasn't long before it became what might be called Hot AC or Adult CHR today. They were not sold to Eastman Broadcasting until 1964.
The original call letters of WKKO 99.9 were WTRT, when it was also owned by Booth Broadcasting Company. Maybe Colonel Flagg can remember what the other Ohio station was that that had the WTRX call letters before 1960.
From 1955-1959, AM 1290 and FM 100.5 were WTRX and WTRX-FM in Bellaire, OH, now WLYV and WOMP-FM.

Re: 94.1 WHST now on the air
If the clips of the station featured in the "History of Detroit Radio" documentary are representative, WKLR as a soul station sounded pretty amateurish circa 1970. Not nearly as professional as WJLB (and WCHB) sounded in that same time frame. However, one of WKLR's personalities, "Charlie Chuck" Welch, went on to make his own impact in the market when he started WJUC in 1996. In the meantime, WJLB often showed up in the Toledo ratings in the '80s and early '90s (as did WHYT during its CHuRban period), during the time when Toledo's only local Urban station was a peashooter AM (1520 WVOI).radioandtventhusiast wrote: ↑Tue Apr 04, 2023 12:10 pmThe soul format from what I understand, never was that big of a success. Booth also had an R&B station in Cleveland, WABQ (a daytimer at 1540).

WSTD 96.9 was a satellite-fed oldies and later, adult contemporary radio station in Standish that existed from 1988 to 1999, when it went dark. It returned to the air in 2000 as WWCM, as satellite of WCMU-FM, after the station's owners donated the license and facilities.ChrisWL1980 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 25, 2023 6:34 pmWBBC existed in Michigan on 1330 AM in Flint prior to 1960, and later on 94.1 FM in Jackson until maybe 1973 or '74... the WBBC calls exist today in Blackstone, VA.Mega Hertz wrote: ↑Fri Mar 10, 2023 10:32 pmOther call letters to avoid:

The FM station I cannot get in my village of Sanford, MI. I think that is blocked.

Re: 94.1 WHST now on the air
I'm sure that one was started in Chicago in the 1950s.
