NBC on WBKB

Post by paul8539 » Fri Sep 23, 2022 2:05 am

I saw someplace that WBKB in Alpena picked up NBC on one of its subchannels. This means that they have all 3 major networks: CBS on the .1, ABC on the .2, and now NBC, Is this rumor correct?

Although I am unsure of the numerical sequence (CBS is on 11.1 obviously), you are correct. They also have FOX.

Some cable & sat viewers in the area are unhappy because WPBN / WTOM was dropped in favor of WBKB's new NBC subchannel. That means most area viewers now only have access to one regional TV newscast, the one produced by WBKB.

Interesting how one can get past the monopoly rule now by simply using sunchannels.

It's because there are no reliable fringe service stations anymore because of the limitations of digital TV signals.

In the old days. before network switching, you could get NBC analog signals from WNEM 5 Bay City and WTOM 4 Cheboygan around Alpena with a moderate to good outdoor antenna.

There was no other alternative besides WBKB 11. Alpena has been a forgotten market.

I'm sure whomever ended up with the station after Steve Marks died is rolling in dough because they control all 4 networks...

It's Alpena

Didn't WGTU have a translator in Alpena at one point?

Seems like it was on Channel 55.

WGTU was rebroadcast on K55AW, channel 55. This translator received its CP on 4/11/1975, predating the launch of WGTQ by about a year.

IIRC, an old-timer here on the Buzzboard who claimed to have worked on the K55AW facility said Hillman got a good signal, but 55 didn't put much of a signal into Alpena proper, and signal strength there wasn't even as good as the WGTQ signal once 8 was launched. I haven't come across renewal notices for K55AW, either.
