So it’s indefensible that Gov. Gretchen Whitmer recently line-item vetoed a new investment in Michigan’s young readers that was sure to help improve their skills.
The plan was simple: Michigan families could receive $1,000 reading scholarships to help less than proficient readers in grades K-5 hire a tutor or attend a summer learning program. It passed the Michigan House and Senate with nearly unanimous support.
The program was fully paid for with federal COVID relief funds appropriated by Congress, designed for exactly this purpose: helping mitigate the significant COVID-related learning loss. And make no mistake, that learning loss was exacerbated here by how long the governor appeased the teachers' union bosses and kept schools closed.
Whitmer didn’t outright say why she chose to veto such a seemingly common-sense program, but the answer is obvious when you look at what campaign donors said. The Michigan Education Association said the money should have gone to school districts, which “are proven to do a good job for students.”
This is an op-ed from Betsy DeVos, so I'm sure Whitmer supporters will attack the source rather than addressing the fact that her line-item veto was bought and paid for by the MEA. Those idiots pushed to keep schools closed as long as they could and now they want additional money when they have proven they are UNABLE to produce results.

From what I'm seeing from other places, this bill had a LOT of non-educational pork in it.

Was any of that line item vetoed, or was it allowed to go into law because it was supported by the MEA thugs?

Good find, Matt. Thanks for sharing.
This evening, the Freep of all sources is reporting that Whitmer plans to "ignore" individual campaign contribution limits. The article is behind a paywall, so I didn't read it, but how can she do that? Isn't that a violation of the law?
She really does act like a queen.
Morgan Wallen is a piece of garbage.

Money isn't everything - ask the woman who the "I'm with her" sticker on your prius is supporting.
She's getting out of state money AND she's breaking campaign finance law under the bullshit guise of the possibility of a recall.

"Multiple" donors have given $250,000 - this is starting to look like a serious violation.

James Craig will prove to be a very formidable opponent to Whitmer, provided he makes no significant blunders on the campaign trail. As it stands now, he BY FAR is the Republicans' best option for victory in 2022.
The remaining announced GOP candidates for governor do not impress me in the least.

Mark Bernstein, a statewide elected official is in the quarter mill donation club as is the governor of Illinois. Mark's brother, ANOTHER statewide official might have to rule on the legality of these donations. Any word on whether Richard has returned stateside?

That’s if the Republicans are willing to nominate him.

38.6% is out of state money and she's breaking campaign finance laws.

He's been back. He was on a humanitarian mission. Fox 2 had a good story on it a month ago.

Remember that “2000 Mules” was concocted by a circus of elephants.
The right needs to stop worry about what’s between people’s legs. Instead, they should focus on what’s between their ears.
