Lack of Local Reporters

Lack of Local Reporters
Is it my imagination or have local TV stations cut back on the number of local reporters they have now? It seems like there's limited local news, especially with a reporter in the field, and more national news which will just be repeated after the 6:00 news. TV5 has two sports reporters they don't even use. I don't understand TV5 management's lack of interest in sports.
Re: Lack of Local Reporters
There used to be quite a bunch of photogs and reporters. Then company's got more greedy and had the photogs do both with the camera on a tripod. Cut backs, layoffs. And the news producers got real lazy and took national stories off Pathfire ( a server from networks ) cut and paste and done. More cut backs and layoffs. News is ready to air. without camera operators and several other positions, called automation. Tv stations really don't care about anything or anyone except MONEY!
Re: Lack of Local Reporters
There’s too many newscasts and not enough news for a mid-sized market like Flint. 4 hours of morning news, noon news, 4,5,6,10, and 11pm news, weekend morning news. Managers at all 3 stations are willing to add newscasts without a plan on how to hire real reporters. That leads to the crap you see now. Lots of repetition, spot news, community events, soft features and a healthy dose of CNN News Source and affiliate packages. It’s news on the cheap and you can fill it with lots of commercials.
Until you get a news person in the GM role, none of this will change sadly.

I see that Ty is coming back to town his wife of six months lives in Saginaw and left Fox17 and is leaving the business for good.
Go Pistons, Let's Go Redwings.

Good for Ty. Sad that he is getting out of the business. But when you get married and can’t live under the same roof, it’s understandable that he’d make a leap outside of TV. Hopefully now Ty will get normal hours and holidays off. Or maybe he’ll be rehired at 25-66 where the In Over Her Head News Director is apparently OK with hiring reality show weather forecasters.

Ty Shesky, who was the former Chief Meteorologist at 25-66... now working in Grand Rapids. Ty just announced he’s quitting his job and moving back to the Thumb area.

Jonathan Jackson is now gone from TV5, going to Columbus, Ohio per his Facebook page.
Re: Lack of Local Reporters
Maybe he’ll come back when Ahmad leaves.
Re: Lack of Local Reporters
Possibly. If I were him and had to do the job of Chief Met... not given the title or a pay raise... I’d leave. The former GM/egomaniac/accountant in chief, the current Shipped In from Out of Town new Sinclair GM, and the In Over Her Head News Director all keep making promises to Ahmad that they don’t keep.
Ahmad is too good of a guy to complain. But he could easily get a job in a much bigger market... and get away from the Sinclair corporate Death Star when his contract expires.

Re: Lack of Local Reporters
Are there other people leaving too? Since it is so bad there I’m sure there is.
Re: Lack of Local Reporters
Kermit: no one really wants to stay. That’s been the problem with 25-66 for years now. Extremely low morale. It starts with the current pay freeze. Before that, it was the mandate that no one could get more than a 1.5 percent yearly pay increase (regardless of performance, promotion, or if you were making significantly less than the market average). The draconian measures from the corporate Death Star mean the good people who can (and will) move on leave Pierson Road... and that leaves us with the incompetent managers who don’t have a plan to raise ratings or revenue. It’s a vicious cycle... one that has plagued 25-66 for years.
Didn’t use to be that way. When we were hiring good talent, building the new studio, winning great coverage, it was a lot of fun to come to work. Not anymore.. hence the continuous cycle of departures. Once you’re contract is up, it’s just expected you’re going to leave. There’s little effort on behalf of the GM or HR Director to fix it.
