To be clear some downtown streets are blocked to traffic on weekends as Matt pointed out but the protestors didn't confine themselves to closed streets. Even if they did legally a permit is required.

Why is there "unrest"? I haven't watched the news in a very long time, so is there anything significant I missed?

New York and Chicago were all in with respect to their sanctuary status — until they were hit with the challenge of actually providing sanctuary. In other words, typical liberal hypocrisy.

6 years ago Ann Arbor cops killed a black woman wielding a knife after they were called to a domestic disturbance. She had a history of mental illness and had cocaine, and THC in her blood and a BAC of .14 at her autopsy. People on the left are still pissed the cops were exonerated.
