WWV / WWVH
WWV / WWVH
I've been going around resetting the clocks for DST.
WWV is weak on 10 MHZ. On 5 MHZ I'm getting a good signal from WWVH, with a weaker WWV in the background.

I don't mean to brag, but I just put a puzzle together in 1 day and the box said 2-4 years.
Re: WWV / WWVH
Yup, today's the day. I usually check reception of CHU along with WWV and go with the clearer signal.
Some days, none of those signals are audible enough to use. In that event, I just use the clock on my cell phone, which is usually spot-on with the SW broadcasts.
Hopefully, the nuisance of DST will go away at some point. Michigan's Upper Peninsula really got jobbed when DST was implemented. In my hometown, we used to be on Central Standard Time year-round and high noon was 12:12 PM, which sure seems logical to me. Now we're in the Eastern Time Zone and when DST kicks in, high noon is 2:12 PM. It's wholly unnatural...and stupid.

Re: WWV / WWVH vAND
Some late evenings WWV is strong on 2.5 MHz and stronger on 5 mHz, not very good on 10 , and gone on 15, 20 and 25 MHz, some days you can hear it on 20, and rare E-layer openings it gets real strong on 25 MHz.
I have heard WWVH on 5, and 10 at night, have heard them on 15, 20 and 25 in the afternoon, But not so often lately, in the solar minimum years.
CHU is alsays pretty good on 7850 kHz, and after dark it comes in strong on 3330 kHz. Rarely gets here on 14670 kHz but some days when it does, it's at mid day.
A god way to learn about propagation is checking the time stations at different frequencies at different times of day.

Re: WWV / WWVH
I have one clock that I never have to change, it sits on UT all year. by the way some of my clocks have an auto set feature for daylight savings time, but this one is an ancient nixie tube display 24 hour format clock sitting on my radio desk !
Most Amateur Radio ops who routinely work contacts outside their local time zone use UT (Universal Time, Greenwich zone) . for logkeeping and verification notices they send out and receive... (QSL Cards)

Decent signal on my crappy $17 radio @ 15 MHz as I'm typing this.
No signal from any of the other frequencies.
Heard Radio Havana on at least two frequencies (calling Turkeytop!).

Morgan Wallen is a piece of garbage.

I have a standing invitation for whenever I do visit Cuba, to be given a tour of the RHC facilities and to be interviewed on the radio. I'll get there one of these days.

Re: WWV / WWVH
When I was a kid, I sent for a QSL card from Radio Havana; I got junk mail from them for 5 years, the CIA probably thought I was on the red list! Actually, as a teen, I used to listen to HCJB for the DX Party Line and learned a lot about shortwave - A recording from Glen Hauser was frequently on there with Helen and Chet? (no, that was WTOD Polka party). Who was the host in the mid 70's?
Re: WWV / WWVH
Is CHU back on 7850 kHz?
A few months ago, reception was bad Night after Night. Other Nights CHU 3330 was stronger than any other time signal I could receive. It is much closer to Michigan, from SW of Ottawa.
When WWV transmitted from Beltsville, MD, it was strong nearly every Night on 5 MHz.

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

Re: WWV / WWVH
The very western end of the Upper Peninsula (West of the 90°W meridian - or about about ten miles of it) is closer to the natural boundary of the Mountain Time Zone than it is to the natural boundary of the Eastern Time Zone.WC8KCY wrote: ↑Sun Mar 08, 2020 12:11 pmYup, today's the day. Of course, it really should be in Central.
Re: WWV / WWVH
There have been some interesting propagation days and nights this spring , here in the Detroit area.
A few late afternoons I could hear CHU on all three freqs.
Some days I could hear WWV on 15, 20 and 25 MHz.But not on 10, other days It was real strong on 10 but not so strong on 15 and nothing on 20 or 25.
Some nights it was good on 2.5 and 5 ,but not much on ten and nothi Other nights it was still good on 15 and better on 10 and not on the lower freqs.nothing higher.
Generally the higher freqs would be best in daylight and the lower freqs at night . With low solar activity the higher freqs don't get refracted back to earth over the horizon as reliably.
I check the reception of the time signals as a clue what Amateur bands will be good to operate on.

The WWV Song (5-10-15-20-25-30...). Actually, they did operate on 30 MHz (and 35 MHz ) until 1953. When they do their "TOH" ID, I always expect them to break into this song.

Re: WWV / WWVH
I engineered the Chet and Chet Polka Show on WOPA, 1490, in Oak park IL, when I was a teen aged Radio engineer Hosts were Chester Gulinski and Chester Lasik. (but now I forget where my keys are)
Great polka music of the 1960's .
Had fresh ink on the First Class FCC license !
Re: WWV / WWVH
I know they dropped the 25MHz transmitter for a while, but now it's back. I hear it sometimes when the E-layer forms up.CK-722 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 16, 2020 8:03 amThe WWV Song (5-10-15-20-25-30...). Sometimes I hear CHU on 14670 kHz but it's real unusual short skip for them to reach Detroit !
Re: WWV / WWVH
Don't forget to tune in and set your clocks, if you haven't already.
