KYW Newsradio cuts teletype background sound

August 7 2020-"A familiar sound in Philadelphia radio vanished from the airwaves in recent weeks, as KYW Newsradio 1060 [Entercom]chose to ditch the clicking teletype noise that has filled the background of broadcasts for decades."

I think it’s hilarious when stations use the fake teletype sound effects for their news broadcasts. Hell if they use that sound why not go back to 1940‘S technology and sound like the old telephone line connection they used to have. That tinny sound was great in the 1940’s but not in 2020.

I used to be in charge of the 'teletype' sound at KFWB in Los Angeles back in the NewsRadio 980 days. It was a cart machine on the same console bus as the studio mikes.

We had the sfx on a 30 minute Fidelipac and it ran 24/7. Once a week, the production guy gave me a fresh cart and I would slug it into the machine during a commercial break. After a week, the tape already looked pretty awful. This was in the very early 90s. Our co-owned competition over at KNX switched over to a digital storage device for their 'teletype' somewhere after the CBS/Westinghouse merger about 1990 or so.

The KFWB 'teletype' was originally recorded in the little room where the teletype machine lived, just before they switched over to dot matrix printers, which would not sound nearly as authoritative burrrrping behind a news anchor.

I always referred to it as that "ticker tape sound".

It is annoying to me, but then again I guess I am too young to appreciate it at 37.The only time I somewhat liked it was the WJR ticker at the top of the hour, but that sounded cleaner to me.

The right needs to stop worry about what’s between people’s legs. Instead, they should focus on what’s between their ears.
Audacity sucks.

I recall back in the 1960s, there was a station in Cleveland OH with the KWY call letters. When did it change?

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it.

KYW was in Cleveland until a federal ruling undid the NBC-Westinghouse swap between Cleveland and Philadelphia. KYW went back to Philadelphia with Westinghouse, and the Cleveland stations became WKYC.

The WKYC calls stayed on Channel 3 long after NBC left ownership in the market.

Today the stations are: WKYC/3 (Tegna-owned NBC affiliate), WTAM/1100 (iHeart news/talk), WMJI/105.7 (iHeart classic hits)

A lookup of KYW's history will also show that its original location under Westinghouse was in Chicago, from 1921-1934, then to Philly then to Cleveland then back to Philly.

So KYW was the Raiders of Radio!

I totally forgot about KYW's early start in Chicago!
