Nielsen audio round-up - #'s published on July 21

Grand Rapids:
-WLHT: Worst book in several years. One might have to go back to the Kidd Krapdick days to find numbers so low.
-WFGR: The good news for Townsquare is a good chunk of 95.7's audience possibly has drifted to 98.7, which saw its best numbers (by far) in the history of the station!
-WKLQ: This station is the model of consistency; the needle barely moves from one survey to the next! Clocking in at a 2.7.
-iFart has not one, but two wasted frequencies: 101.3 & 96.1 are ratings nightmares. In other words, a shit sandwich. Muskegon's 101.7 WMRR, a station with a shit signal across much of the GR area, even outperformed 96.1 in the AQH share department and almost tied WBFX!!!

Muskegon:
WMRR, WMUS, and WVIB are #1, #2 and #3. No surprise there. WOOD-FM remains a non-subscribing station. Ditto WSNX and WHTS.

Kalamazoo:
WKFR is #1 by a mile (as usual). Nice rebounds for WRKR, FM 106.5 and Classic Hits 102.5. Jack FM is also showing some growth. Poor book for Win 98.5.

Battle Creek:
Clownsquare's Kalamazoo stations with big Cereal City audiences don't subscribe even though WBCK-FM and low rated 104.9 The Edge do. (Figure that one out!) The new Oldies format at 102.7 FM / AM 930 is drawing mediocre numbers, albeit not horrible for an AM / FM translator combo. Win 98.5 isn't the force it once was. I bet 94.1 Duke FM draws at least a 6 share in Calhoun County.

95.7 SOUNDS A LOT like 105.3 nowadays, I can Imagine a lot of their listeners went to 94.5.
LMFAO AT 101.7 tying with 101.3 and 96.1 what a EPIC FAIL.

Nice rebound for 105.7, 100.5 has also seen its lowest ratings in a long time.

I am trying to remember a time when WKFR wasn't the top station in Kzoo...

I can't think of it.

Certainly in the last 15 years, they have not been dislodged from the #1 position very often. There was one book within the last few years where their numbers came in unusually low. It is possible B93 outranked them.

I think WRKR may have beaten its sister station just a couple times over the last decade and a half.

In the late 90's, there were probably stretches where B93 outperformed them or came damn close. WKFR's numbers were held down for a brief period by WFAT.

But yeah, if one looks at every ratings survey over the past couple decades, 103.3 KFR is probably #1 at least 80 percent of the time if not 90 percent.

Q-Lite 106.5 / Q106.5 / FM 106.5 has always been positioned in the same spot as Star 105.7 or somewhere between Star 105.7 and KFR, which has made it difficult for them to ever reach #1. WKFR has had a massively wide music lane to itself for more than two decades now.

Why Midwest hasn’t flipped one of their garbage frequencies and taken on KFR is baffling. Just match them song for song, lean it slightly rhythmic and KFR is done.

Midwest would half-ass it, though. I do not at all trust them to perform the job properly. For some reason, WVFM and WNWN-FM are the only stations where they seem willing to invest $$$.

Even 590 WKZO has become a steaming pile of garbage!!! It's a disgrace what they've let happen to 590, frankly.

It's odd that iHeart pays for WMRR to be a subscriber in Grand Rapids, but not for WOOD or WSNX in Muskegon (both of which are licensed to Muskegon; it's doubly odd that WBFX and WSRW, who both have so-so signals in Muskegon, are Muskegon subscribers)

I agree. Don't they have that CHR is GB that's top of the ratings?

You are right on there. They predictably half assed i92.9 in Lansing and we saw what happened there.

I think part of the problem is guys like VP programming Midwest Jeff McCarthy frankly have just been around for too long. They bring the same boring philosophy that worked in the 90’s to today’s mainstream stations and it just doesn’t work. Some of these guys have no clue what is “mainstream” today and are unwilling to spend the time listening to, and taking suggestions from, up and coming young programmers who live the lifestyle. Radio is dying right before our very eyes. Least we could do is prepare the young few that are interested in our business to be somewhat successful by using their passion and creativity without burdening them with stale philosophies and outdated ideas.

Yep, 101.1 WIXX Green Bay. Listen to them all the time in ludington area. Funny thing. They used to have sister station wild 99.7 back in the early 2000’s they pretty much covered the Pop rhythmic hits that they did not play to protect its ratings.

True. Then, 95.9 flipped to Hot AC and Wild went away.

Hot AC was a disaster for 95.9.
