Benny Mardones dies

Post by matt1 » Mon Jun 29, 2020 12:08 pm

Singer Benny Mardones ("Into The Night" in 1980, repeated again in 1989 & the song "Shelia C" in late 1981) has died of Parkinsons disease at 73 years old. Here is "Shelia C" (from late 1981 "Too Much To Lose") which did not chart on Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyacbCI-joI

“She’s just 16 years old, leave her alone they said”. What’s wrong with those lyrics?

Does anyone out there think Neil Diamond's Girl You'll A Woman Soon is kind of icky?

One of the songs on Van Morrison's Astral Weeks is Cypress Avenue. In it A man is watching a young schoolgirl walking down the street. The last lyrics mentions she's fourteen years old. Lester Bangs mentioned this in an essay he wrote on the album. He said he almost came to blows with friends over it.

Yes, Time-Life is going to supplement the Singer Songwriters series with a Singer Songwriters Pedifile CD.

I noticed someone commented on the YouTube song “Shelia C” that Benny is God. All I have to say is “Seriously”.

Ever hear of the Mann Act? Well, it applies to women also, as hundreds of schoolmarms have found out.

It would seem that it would vary with the AOC (Alexandria Ocasio Cortez? No.) in each state.

Some stations banned the song for this reason. That's why it didn't chart higher.

I don't recall ever hearing another Benny Mardones song, but 'Into The Night' was one helluva song & vocal performance.

If you were a teenager listening to the song at the time, nothing.

Beavis & Butthead still on 24/7 in the background?

Follow up to "Into The Night" called "Hometown Girls" (audio only) Went to # 103 (for only 1 week) (Billboard's Bubbling Under The Hot 100 Charts) back on November 1, 1980. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SV6z62PYfEA NOT sure if any of you remember that song. By the way, "Into The Night" went to # 11 (August of 1980) on Billboard Top 40, then repeated again at # 20 in July of 1989. The song "Shelia C" did NOT chart on Billboard.

Interview on "American Bandstand" in 1980 (with the late Dick Clark). Problem was also WJRT (ABC 12) in Flint, MI did NOT show "American Bandstand" from early 1976 till 1988 because they showed "Impressions" & "Open Door" talk shows instead. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P47MDJf71Ao

The co writer of "Into The Night" was Robert Tepper who in early 1986 had a Top 40 song "No Easy Way Out" (from Sly Stallone's "Rocky IV" movie soundtrack) & his album.
