WWMT is building a new studio and control room

Post by Michigan Media » Mon Jun 15, 2020 6:47 pm

From WWMT: https://wwmt.com/news/local/newschannel ... nstruction
A whole new look is on the horizon at Newschannel 3, after the station launched construction on a new studio and control room.

The news and production teams moved Monday, June 15, 2020, into a temporary studio space within the building that houses the offices and studios on East Maple Street. That temporary set is what viewers will see on the broadcasts as the main studio undergoes a complete transformation. The work coincides with the station's 70th year on air.

The updates include a new control room, as well as the desks, monitors and backdrops the Newschannel 3 anchors and reporters use every day to deliver the news. Construction on the control room began a few weeks earlier, in an adjacent part of the building.

As the work progresses, Newschannel 3 staff will keep you up to date on the changes, with photos posted here as well as on social media channels.
This project is LONG overdue. I believe the studio was refreshed back in 2007-2008 to coincide with the rebrand from “News 3” to “Newschannel 3.” Some set pieces, like the anchor desk, date back to the Granite Broadcasting era in the late 1990s.

I really hate how the local stations have to include "news" into their name. IMO, News 3 sounds better than Newschanel 3.

If the new news set will have social distancing due to COVID-19. I wonder if the outside will get an update as well since that hasn't changed since 96 I wouldn't mind a retro look with big fat 3 from the '80s to 95.

I find it interesting that the news stations, at least in this market, have dropped separate news/station branding in favor of just one:

WZZM is "13 On Your Side" for everything - I don't think they even title their newscasts with "News," it's just "13 On Your Side at 6" or whatever.

WOOD dropped the "24 Hour News 8" branding, and now just uses the WOOD logo on its newscast graphics (WOOD TV8 at 6pm) and the anchors/reporters just say "News 8." Must be after 20+ years they decided the "24 Hour" part was no longer relevant.

Like "9&10 News" in Traverse City/Cadillac. Absolutely ridiculous.

Exactly! Seems to me when a station airs more programming than newscasts its pointless to call the station 9&10 News. Network TV does have news, but not enough where they should be labeled newschannel or something like that.

Agreed. I always thought continuously referring to WOOD-TV as "24 Hour News 8" was odd also. 7&4, for example, is "TV-7&4" or "7&4" (now). Only reference to "News" is during a newscast. I believe it has always been that way (even the NewsChannel and Newswatch days).

Now I don't know enough about GR as to what the slogans used for all the stations were back before 2006.

I can tell you that WOOD TV started using the "24 Hour News 8" moniker since late 1990 or early 1991. The music they used for the news was godawful for a couple of years. It sounded like they got the music from Zamfir, Master of the Pan Flute.

I remember those horrible elements, Big-D. That music package was the worst!!!

Much better music, news intros, and voiceovers came about around 1992 or 1993 with the change in call letters, but the visuals (lower thirds, fulls, etc.) were HORRIBLE!!! Public access quality. Worse than even the shit ZZM used in the 00's.

By the mid 90s, TV-8's visual elements improved. By 1999 or 2000, they started looking darn good.

The set itself is 'Starbucks' nice, but those dark teal and grey diagonal lines in the video wallpaper background... YIKES!!!

Agreed on the background; the colors of the stripes and the yellow in the WWMT logo clash terribly. A plain colored background would look much, much better.

I sure see some elements of the WOOD-TV set here; I bet the same company designed both.

The stone work looks nice and the video walls are properly sized; I hate the video wall on the WZZM set because it is far too big.

Watched News 3 this evening mainly out of curiosity on the new set. Alot of copycat elements. Monitors on the front of the desk like 8, couch area like 13 and 17, monitor matrix wall like 8 and 17, anchors stand like 13.

What caught my eye most was at the end of the newscast. Besides the copyright, the Chyron graphic included a "Promotional Consideration" listing. I would have expected this on a lifestyles show like 8 West, 17 Morning Mix or Our West Michigan not a newscast.
