Surprised It Took This Long

Post by Bryce » Sun Jun 21, 2020 8:02 am

UPDATE 10:10 AM: Seattle Police have confirmed CHS’s early reports on the shooting and say that a 19-year-old is dead and that there have been no arrests:

On June 20th, at approximately 2:30 AM, East Precinct officers responded to a report of shots fired in Cal Anderson Park. This is inside the area referred to as the Capitol Hill Organized Protest (CHOP). Officers attempted to locate a shooting victim but were met by a violent crowd that prevented officers safe access to the victims. Officers were later informed that the victims, both males, had been transported to Harborview Medical Center by CHOP medics. Officers responded to Harborview and were informed that one of the victims, a 19-year-old male, had died from injuries. The other victim, also a male, unknown age, remains in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The suspect or suspect(s) fled and are still at large. There is no description at this time. Homicide detectives responded and are conducting a thorough investigation, despite the challenges presented by the circumstances.

New York and Chicago were all in with respect to their sanctuary status — until they were hit with the challenge of actually providing sanctuary. In other words, typical liberal hypocrisy.

Are you denying all the dead at the hands of the police?

Is the CHOP area historically known for high crime rates?

I do hope that the insurgents / rebels/ whatever the hell you wanna call them allow police detectives to conduct a proper investigation.

From what I have read this morning, the occupiers, good as any other name, wouldn't allow police in when the shootings happened, and probably won't be all that happy to cooperate in any investigation. I know this won't be a popular opinion, but at this point, police or city officials should negotiate to allow all the innocent people who were trapped by the takeover to peacefully leave, turn off all utilities, set up an armed line around the zone allowing no one in or out and let them live in peace. I figure three weeks or so will be all it takes to get things back to normal with no power, water or supplies of any sort. if they want to be free of all things associated with the city and state, let them. They should have the right to see what it is really like to be that free.

Time to end the silliness and send in the National Guard and clean up the area. It would be done in 5 minutes problem solved.

Speaking for myself I'm not denying them but according to the Washington Post who seems to be the popular record keeper 93.3% of those killed since 2015 were armed. And a gun was the most popular weapon.
People who whine and cry about how many citizens the cops kill never even entertain the thought that many of them brought on their own deaths.
In the 4.5 years from 2015 midway through 2019 of 4400 police killings only 285 in those 4.5 years were unarmed.

Any of you people actually there? Bryce, your "news" is unattributed, actions you've chided other posters for. And you've all said who can believe all that "fake news"?

Any studies out there about how many lives have been saved by police?

Yes, policing in the country has major issues and there have been many lives needlessly cut short that should not have been.

But there is literally no one out there talking about the ugly, impossible to quantify truth: our police forces have saved far far far more lives - black, white, whatever - than they've taken. And it's not even a close comparison.

Saving lives isn't sexy though. It doesn't make people mad. It doesn't get a counter or ticker on CNN or Fox News. Instead, we just ignore that to chase down today's hot takes and make ourselves feel better about ourselves because ... you know ... outrage!

I don't know about any actual studies, but there is a 72-to-animal theory - basically, that when society breaks down, people resort to their animal-like instincts in 72 hours. Rule of law simply doesn't work without an enforcement mechanism, and without cops, the only remaining enforcement is a combination of vigilante justice and every-man-for-himself.

Between my daughter and ex son-in-law they have saved somewhere near 15-20 people by administering naloxone to OD victims. Of course one can't be sure how many may have survived the event without the help. That is just two cops in Washtenaw county responding to a singular type of emergency.

Lots of circumspect going on. None of it compelling.

285 unarmed people killed in one year and no police in prison?

I lived in Seattle for 5 years. Capitol Hill is a very eclectic place and always has been. Artsy-craftsies, students, LGBTQ, hobo's (as we called them back in the day), a fair amount of high-wealth individuals, some seniors as well. Dick's Hamburgers (fast food institution) next to a place that might nick you $300 a pop for dinner. Quite a few bars in the area as well. Moves to the beat of a different drum.

Not entirely surprisingly when you have a stew like that there will be more crime than some homogeneous suburb. Generally they are crimes of opportunity, car and residential break-in's, robberies, a few assaults, and yes, an occasional murder. Like any number of such neighborhood in any number of large cites in this country, probably best to maintain some semblance of being aware of your surrounding. That said I could name 100 places around the country I'd be much more fearful of hanging out.

Quick story: Mrs. Nightfly and I attended a Halloween film screening of the 1926 "Faust" in the Paramount Theater, home of the "Mighty Wurlitzer Organ" and narrated by none other than Penn & Teller's Teller (yup, he does speak when he's so inclined). Anyway, after the show we walked up to Cap Hill for a bite and the scene was incredible and terrifying all at the same time. Only thing closer in my experience was a stroll down Sunset Blvd. in LA on a Halloween night. Bucket list stuff. :)
