Could A Noncommercial And Commercial Station Share One Channel Like 6 And 53?

Well if it works for 6 and 53... yeah
Re: Could A Noncommercial And Commercial Station Share One Channel Like 6 And 53?
The only thing is that noncommercial TVs operate on reserved noncommercial TV channels, and that has been a problem in the past, like Chicago, where they swapped a noncommercial channel in Gary, IN for a commercial channel in Chicago. Even that was a problem.

Should this be in the Lansing section?
And, no.

Well... many, many moons ago WILX shared channel 10 with WKAR (or WMSB back then.)
Organman is right, yes, noncomm and commercial seem to be able to channel share.
WPMT Fox43 and WITF PBS are both sharing digital RF channel 36 in Harrisburg, PA. Both keep their virtual channel number 43 and 33 respectively and each has a .2 subchannel.
I think the practice of the FCC allocating a specific channel number in each city to be reserved for non/comm is kinda out the window with digital.
The idea of channel sharing is that both stations would retain their seperate licenses and that those licenses would continue as non-comm or commercial as they were.
They would also have the same privileges and obligations under their seperate licenses like must carry or retrans consent.

On WILX/WSMB, Yes they did share the same channel, 10. On the last day of the share as the WMSB engineer was leaving the transmitter site, a cavity fire started in the transmitter, crippling the station for a bit.
On channel shares , that was apparently a “one and done” event, so my answer stands as no, unless the FCC does yet another band sale.

And, shouldn’t this be in the Lansing section?
And, while it’s here, how well can you folk in the Flint section pick up 6/53 now that they are on channel 14?

Flint is the largest city in the state and maybe the US without a PBS affiliate serving it with a strong signal. The neighboring signals are abysmal. You would have thought that U of M and CMU would have tried harder. PBS could go on a sub channel or two of a commercial signal in the area. That's why I put it in this section.
You could talk about how the neighboring signals are sufficient but they aren't. Mr. Grover, who has since passed away, had been a UHF TV engineer for decades, and he said that this fact was undeniable.

Of course a commercial station could share a subchannel with non-commercial, but not vice versa.
Ask not what your country can do FOR you; ask what they are about to do TO YOU!!

Mr. Grover should have worked for PBS.
Imagine referring to Mr. Grover during pledge drive.

6-53 can be seen in Shiawassee County, but not so much in Genesee County
Re: Could A Noncommercial And Commercial Station Share One Channel Like 6 And 53?
It could go either way. They are only sharing spectrum, but each holds its own FCC license.audiophile wrote: ↑Mon Mar 23, 2020 7:05 amOf course a commercial station could share a subchannel with non-commercial, but not vice versa.

Its not like sharing a subchannel as there are separate licenses, which is why, in the case of WLNS/WLAJ, WLNS is still permitted to have its own virtual channel, instead of being 53-3.
