Michigan Primary
Michigan Primary
I am really on the fence about going to vote this primary season. Tbh, I'm just not thrilled with anyone on the ballot. Further there really isn't much else on the ballot, just a proposal for the intermediate school district in my area. Trump has done some good things but he does not act very presidential and I think that has kinda hurt our image around the world. I just don't agree with the voting for the lesser of two evils mantra. One should not sacrifice their principals just for the sake of voting. Voting is a right and a privilege in the free world and it's also your right not to vote if none of the candidates are of your liking.
Re: Michigan Primary
If your vote (or lack thereof) is one of principle, then what you should do, IMO, is still vote but either do a write-in or vote for some other candidate who is on the ballot but not viable. That way you're not sacrificing your principles and you're still sending the message that you don't support either of the major candidates.
I sometimes do that in local races where it is already a forgone conclusion who is going to win but I don't support that person. I once did a write-in for our local Prosecuting Attorney as "Anybody but _______" (and I won't mention the name here).

Re: Michigan Primary
I’ve voting for Gabbard. Not a fan of her policies, but chaos makes us on the sidelines who dislike all of the candidates more entertained. Warren may drop out before Tuesday meaning only three Dems left if that’s the case.
Bill Weld is also on the ballot for the Republicans if you want to go that route.
Write-ins do not count in Michigan unless that person is registered.

Re: Michigan Primary
Fuzz, who is your ideal candidate? I ask because any candidate will never appease all those who vote.

Re: Michigan Primary
Very limited government, both personal and economic. I guess that makes me libertarian, though not necessarily by party. No one in the two major parties offer that. Don’t say Bill Weld, because he was a joke and a fraud when he was part of that party.
Re: Michigan Primary
In that case you likely will never vote for a presidential candidate. Libertarians are generally very rural individuals who don't understand the resources they receive from the federal government. Do you have an education?

Re: Michigan Primary
Plenty of those I would give up, at least by the government. Public parks and bailouts are the most obvious. I have no issue paying to go to a park. I get it, you are a hard core socialist or communist. I hope you don’t work for a private company or shop at a private store.
Re: Michigan Primary
I'm a Communist? Excellent
How much did your private education cost? Because you most certainly shouldn't have accepted one with Tax dollars.
I am also will to bet you were over 40 (past the time when you have taken most ofthe benefits of a free society) when you decided that paying taxes was unfair.
I think the honorable thing to do is determine how many dollars were spent on you using our democratic socialism system. I bet ( because rural communities cost more to operate) that you owe money.

Re: Michigan Primary
This is one of the most ridiculously bad arguments against libertarianism I've ever seen. Just because someone has received government benefits in the past (let alone receiving a government education as a CHILD - I wasn't aware that CHILDREN are responsible for making decisions about their own educations and how to pay for them) does not mean he/she is somehow hypocritical for politically supporting a libertarian viewpoint. Alternatively stated, being libertarian does not obligate one to voluntarily pay for services currently offered by government.
So by your logic TC, I'll ask you the same question about YOUR political viewpoint. I presume you support higher taxes, is that correct? Given that viewpoint, do you voluntarily send extra money to the IRS every year in the amount that you think you REALLY should be paying per your political views? If not, then take your hypocrisy elsewhere.

Re: Michigan Primary
In exchange for a base standard quality of life for all citizens, yes I would pay more taxes. I would start with a military accountability office so we would distribute funds not to billionaires but to housing and education.
Finland didn't earn the highest quality of life in the world by not providing good education and healthcare while holding their government accountable.
So BMW, do you also support a woman making her own decisions on her body? Or is part of the libertarian hypocrisy.

Re: Michigan Primary
I would actually LOVE to see a checklist just like that on both the IRS and State tax forms, and have the taxes I pay apportioned appropriately. Others could fill their checklist differently and have theirs apportioned to their needs as well, then let Congress or the State Legislature figure out how to spend those apportioned amounts the most effective way, but staying within the apportionments.

Re: Michigan Primary
I live in suburban Detroit in Wayne County, hardly a rural area.
I decided paying taxes on stuff I don’t use was unfair when I was around 20. I have voted against every single millage and will continue to do so. I refuse to live in a community with a local income tax. I have worked hard for my money- it’s not right for another person or group should tell me how to spend it and on what.
My mother claims to hate socialism but voted for the DIA renewal tax. She didn’t like that I called her one, but that’s exactly what she supported. If I want to go down there, I’ll pay. I shouldn’t be forced to pay a tax for a place I haven’t visited since grade school, and have no intention of visiting anytime soon. It’s the same with the zoo.

Why don’t you move to Finland if it’s so great? Serious question.TC Talks wrote: ↑Thu Mar 05, 2020 11:38 amIn exchange for a base standard quality of life for all citizens, yes I would pay more taxes. Re: Michigan Primary
Well, I don't speak the language for starters. There is no call for my skillset in Finland. I am getting to a point where I don't want to be in colder climates. I am making steps to relocate to France for a portion of the year, that would be pleasant. I need to be honest, Michigan continues to move closer to Mississippi with how it operates. We used to be in the top 10 now we rank 33rd. Obviously this means nothing to you, but when Traverse City is a bright spot in the state, and it is starting to feel the impact of the dark politics in Lansing, it's time to call it my vacation home and head elsewhere. I moved here from Colorado, which continues to shine and grow. It just seems like there are too many people here who want to be losers.
