Big Book For Cumulus GR, Cracks 11 Share for January

Post by MrsWarmth » Fri Feb 28, 2020 5:35 pm

Big bounce back for Cumulus in Grand Rapids as WLAV jumps nearly a full share from 3.0-3.8 December to January. WHTS also holds steady at a 2.7 while WKLQ continues its rise to a solid 2.6.

With the other properties in the market, that means that Cumulus has gained over a share and a half from December to January and is up to 11.3 in total shares. With continued growth they should take over for Townsquare as the #2 group in the market by April.

You're funny! :lol

Another great book for Thunder 107.3, I see! :rollin

The combined share for 94.5 & 107.3 (a 3.9) is less than what Nash FM 94.5 earned single-handedly in summer 2018.

Quite a few interesting story lines this time around:
-104.1 WVGR reached an all-time record high for its spoken word format - 5.8 share (ages 12+).
-97 WLAV's 3.8 share, although improved from last survey, still ranks as one of its worst AQH shares of the past 30 years for the station.
-Respectable book for The Q given the inherently niche nature of its format.
-Although #1 (barely) in ages 12+, B93 did have one of its weaker books of the past 20 years.
-WCSG took a big dip; is Joy 99.3 responsible in part?
-Best showing for WGRD in quite a while.
-Why the f&ck does 101.3 The Brew still exist?

Big Book For Cumulus GR, Cracks 11 Share for January

As far as the ‘niche’ alt format goes, Z96-5 did pull a 5.1 in Kalamazoo for a 3-month survey... I can’t remember when, but it was while Jay Morris was brand manager. The format can work if done properly. In my limited samples, I like the overall sound of KLQ. I should revisit it more often.

Z96.5's numbers bounced around...a LOT.

The sample size in K'zoo is almost assuredly puny.

They never could translate numbers into ad revenue, it seemed. Having a sales force who is likely accustomed to selling a station that plays in nursing homes and on farms run by seniors (WKZO) and in dentist offices and Hallmark shops (WVFM) likely didn't help the cause.

Getting back to Grand Rapids, this is one of the worst showings for the Country format in probably 20 years, if not longer. B93 has been around a 7 share in ages 12+ before, but I cannot remember the last time that the #2 Country station in town simultaneously grabbed an AQH share only the low range of the 1's. During the two to three year period after 101.3 dumped Country and prior to 94.5 going Country, it *might* have happened, but I think WMUS was closer to a 2 share at the time. I have no recollection of where B93's numbers resided at the time.

I didnt expect 94.5 to do this well a year forward,
Maybe BBN should buy 101.3 too, sleepy christian music might be an improvement in the ratings for them.

"...take over for Townsquare as the #2 group in the market by April"? Sorry, but I don't see that happening.

Interesting that today I heard that the '20 In A Row' gimmick is back. I didn't know that had come back, is that a recent change? I think the last time they brought it back was when the original Thunder went on the air.

Well, I mean, they had a 4 share 18 months ago.
