Massive WOMC interference in Brighton

The technical side of broadcasting. Think IBOC is a sham? Talk about it here! How about HDTV? Post DX reports here as well.

Massive WOMC interference in Brighton

Post by Mega Hertz » Sat Dec 28, 2019 3:45 pm

WOMC was getting its ass kicked by WCZY "My 104.3" in Mt. Pleasant. Rather strange occurrence as WOMC is usually a steady reception.

Must be a pretty busy day...I have two signals fighting it out on 104.9, a frequency I never get anything on out here. Playing Raconteurs now (waiting for an ID). Anyone know what's up?

Edit: 104.9 the Edge from Battle Creek. Pulling a lot from NW/W.

WUPS (98.5) from Harrison, in like a local. Very busy day (I don't remember what this is called...skip?) for outside signals. This happens once in a great while here...but this time I had something on every signal. Some distant stations had two or more signals fighting (97.7 had Steve Miller and Billy Idol music duking it out). 106.5 had some kind of 90s Modern AC format, seguing Del Amitri to Matchbox 20. Many Detroit stations were struggling, including WDRQ and WNIC. Even more local stations like W4 and 1071one from Ann Arbor were fighting other stations. Probably the wackiest FM day since I moved here a couple years ago.

90.1 from Bay City was coming in fairly strongly in the Southfield and Beverly Hills area a short time ago when I was in the car.

Earlier today, FM 96 from London, ON was walking all over CJWF from Windsor, and as that was occurring, I was getting a pretty good signal from 94.1 Duke FM.

Within the last 90 minutes, 103.9 from Woodstock/London, ON was occupying most of the air space on 103.9 MHz. It was a mix between them, the Smile FM translator, and the French language CBC station from Windsor.

95.1 CKUE from Chatham, ON has been coming in well throughout the day.

Mega, the second station you were hearing on 104.9 was likely WQBX from Alma.

One of the stations you heard on 97.7 was likely WYXX from Goshen, IN.

The station you heard on 106.5 was Kalamazoo's WVFM. The two songs you just mentioned show up back-to-back on their music log and were played shortly before 4PM.

Thanks for that, MW. I was driving and couldn't note everything. Interesting FM around here today.

VERY unusual reception pattern today. Here in Tawas City, you'd think you were driving through Toronto if you were to scan your radio - probably the strongest DX from Toronto I've ever heard here. Also some VERY strong reception from Flint and a few stations from Lansing.

92.3 The Dock
92.7 CJSP
95.1 CKUE
96.5 WQHH (Lansing)
96.7 CHYM
97.5 Virgin Radio (CIQM)
98.1 CKLO
98.9 CHCD
99.1 Lansing
100.3 WNIC
100.9 CBLA
101.3 CKOT
101.7 The One
102.9 CFMO
105.3 CFCA (BOOMING in)
105.5 WWCK (BOOMING in)
107.9 WCRZ (BOOMING in)

98.1 CKLO is a new catch for me. 101.3 CKOT may be a first as well.

Reception of every single station listed above was at least medium strength and rock-solid stable with no fading.

Even at 10pm, in my basement, I'm pulling a SOLID stereo signal of (MW...hold your gag in) 92.1 Fuel FM. Add to that bmw's receptions above, and it has been an insane day for catches.

You lucky bastard...I used to love FM96 before the Wolf signed on.

I guess what amazes me is I had Detroit stations losing ground (which are technically my locals) and getting stations in from west Michigan, north Michigan, Canada, Ohio, Indiana...yet my locals were getting beat down. Strange to me and I hope one of our great engineering minds chimes in on this.

Sorry I missed that. Between IBOC sidebands, the new Canadian drop ins, and translators, the only ones I heard were 320 kW WBCT Beast 93.7, and WLEW 102.1.

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

The Saturday tropo maps at Hepburn's Tropospheric Ducting Forecast site showed a "fair" amount of ducting over the Great Lakes area. Warm air, cold ground, interesting signal paths.

Very busy day (I don't remember what this is called...skip?) for outside signals.
The term you are looking for is "tropo". "Skip" refers to E-skip. Interestingly enough, it is the peak of winter Es at the moment, though only New England has had an opening so far this week and the season isn't usually anything interesting.

12/28 Tropo Summary

Post by cckadlec » Sun Dec 29, 2019 6:27 pm

DEC 28, 2019 TROPO SUMMARY + AUDIO --

A 24-hour period brought a strong high pressure system to the Great Lakes with an even stronger inversion. Here's a summary of the happenings with the final half of the opening to Ontario and WNY eerily similar - straight down to the Christmas music - to the last big one on December 16, 2018. The audio summary includes many of the stations heard, most of them in the null of strong locals (especially my 12-mi. WHTS where two massive signals broke through). Because humans need sleep, the session was split with a morning and evening session before the high moved too far east by 11pm.

It seems the forum is refusing to display my images. I'm not fighting this stupid thing with its quirks, so you can click the image (or lack of image) to view the full-size images in another tab.
