It seems I have a persistent problem when I post to this board. After I finish typing, I hit the "SUBMIT" button, but the progress bar stops (indefinitely, if I take no further action) two-thirds of the way towards completion. I hit the "SUBMIT" bar again, and TWO duplicate posts are submitted to the board.

WCXI is on STA with 250 watts nondirectional from the Wixom area site. The LIC site is still in Fenton. Normally, they don't show the STA contours. I have heard nothing to the effect that the WCXI phasor or transmitter have been installed. The WCXI CP expires 2-15-20.

Based on an 82.8 degree tower with 250 watts and using M-3 (likely to overestimate signal in this area), the 2 mV/m contour would go out about 16 miles, and the 0.5 mV/m would go out about 31 miles. The licensed WPON site at Benstein and Loon Lake Rd., about three miles East, showed much lower field strength than predicted by M-3. As I recall, at 27 miles East the signal was only about 1/3 to 1/2 of the predicted value. I seem to remember that it was around 170 uV/m that I measured, but my measurements can't be located.
I do remember that in late 1989-early 1990, I was working at a plant on Rochester Road near 15 Mile Road.

WPON had a weak signal there using the Benstein site.

You only need to hit submit once.

Navigate to a different page, then come back, and your post will appear. I apologize for this issue. It happens to me, too. It's a problem between phpBB and Cloudflare. I wish I could find a solution to resolve the issue for good, but I've been unsuccessful. I do not want to eliminate Cloudflare, as it's been extremely effective at eliminating undesired bot traffic.

WCXI is on STA with 250 watts nondirectional from the Wixom area site.
https://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.ex ... _num=10475

"WCXI HOLDS AN AUTHORIZATION FOR CONSTRUCTION OF AN IMPROVED FACILITY WITH A POWER INCREASE. ALTHOUGH MUCH OF THE CONSTRUCTION FOR THE NEW FACILITY HAS BEEN COMPLETED, IT IS NOT YET READY FOR LICENSING. IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN SERVICE TO THE PUBLIC, WCXI IS REQUESTING SPECIAL TEMPORARY AUTHORITY TO OPERATE IN NON-DIRECTIONAL MODE FROM ONE OF THE TOWERS AT THE AUTHORIZED CONSTRUCTION PERMIT SITE. IN ACCORDANCE WITH SECTION 73.1615(B)(3), AUTHORITY IS REQUESTED TO OPERATE DAY AND NIGHT AT 25% OF THE LICENSED POWER."

"AS DISCUSSED WITH FCC STAFF, THE TRANSMITTER AT THE CURRENT LICENSED SITE FOR WCXI HAS FAILED. THE STATION IS IN THE PROCESS OF RELOCATING AND THE NEW SITE IS FUNCTIONAL FOR THE STA OPERATIONS. THE LICENSEE RESPECTFULLY REQUESTS OPERATIONS AT 250 WATTS NON-DIRECTIONAL FOR A PERIOD OF 180 DAYS. WITHIN THAT TIME PERIOD A LICENSE TO COVER THE NEW TRANSMITTER SITE WILL HAVE BEEN FILED AND THIS STA WILL BECOME MOOT."

The temporary authority to operate at 250 watts non-directional expires on: 12/23/2019

There's no way in hell WPON is broadcasting at its licensed ERP.

Signal here is VERY faint!!

They COULD be at full power, if as predicted the site has abysmal conductivity. It's hard to say if you are only a few miles away. Doesn't stop the scan at Preston Corners.

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

When the TX site was near Walled Lake (just a few miles farther east), I always picked up WPON during daytime hours clear as a bell in Warren, Troy, and much of Sterling Heights.

I'm having trouble believing a move just a few miles farther west with all new equipment and a minor reduction in ERP would produce such terrible reception in the 14 Mile & Woodward Ave. area if the station were truly running its licensed 670 watts...that is unless a half-assed job was done on the build-out.

I heard that Harold Munn told them not to move to Benstein and Loon Lake Rd because it was so much worse than Square Lake and Telegraph. It may have been Colonel Flagg who told me that. 3 miles West is probably worse yet. You may be in a minimum. Or it could be all of the above.

It was a bit scratchy in the Royal Oak area yesterday near the zoo. Still weak in the Canton area.

Metal here are some questions for the forum to either answer or speculate on:

1. Could it be that WPON was never meant to be a "Detroit" station whose signal would cover the entire Detroit market?
2. Was WPON in the very beginning just a station serving Pontiac as their goal?
3. If no to the two questions above why then didn't they or haven't they applied for 5,000 watts which would give them good coverage in all of the Detroit market which would eliminate the reception issues that some forum members here (like yourself) have pointed out?

4. And before you ask here are some nearby stations either on or slightly above 1460:

Here from Michiguide.com

Nearby stations on 1460 and 1470:

1460 WBRN Big Rapids
1460 WKAM Goshen, IN
1460 WPON Walled Lake
1470 WFNT Flint
1470 WLQR Toledo

It was before my time, but I believe WPON was originally just focused on Oakland County. Pontiac and Royal Oak were the large cities then, with Southfield growing. I know it isn’t supposed to cover the entire market, but a scratchy signal not too far from the transmitter is an issue. Look at how far 1520 in Toledo goes on just 500 watts. Admittedly, the major lobe shoots north.

WLQR Toledo no longer exists, so no issues there. Is 1480 WSDS a factor? 1440? How about 1450 WHLS?
