WILZ Tim Brandow mistake??

Post by matt1 » Mon Sep 30, 2019 2:12 pm

I was listening to WILZ (WHEELZ 104.5 FM) "Classic Rock That Really Rocks" around at 12:25 when former MTV reporter Matt Pinfield did "Pop Quiz". Story about two guitarists Jimmy Crespo & Rick Dufay (replacing Joe Perry & Brad Whitford) did an album with Aerosmith in late 1982 called "Rock In A Hard Place" in which Aerosmith was today's right answer (class "Walk This Way"). Then Tim Brandow on WHEELZ instead played "Dude (Looks Like A Lady)" (from 1987 "Permanent Vacation") instead of the song "Lightning Strikes" (from 1982 "Rock In A Hard Place" which went to # 21 on Billboard Mainstream Rock Charts & did NOT Charted in Hot 100 in November of 1982). Wonder if WHEELZ does NOT have that "Rock In A Hard Place" CD?? The song "Lightning Strikes" is a great song & that is the best song from that 1982 album!!

Is Tim Brandow related to Jay Brandow? I know John Brandow from some Continuing Education dinners. Jay's cousin as I recall. Had a great chat about pop groups and song trivia at one dinner.

John plays guitar too as I recall. Seems like he knew a bunch of local recording artists. Moved on to computer programming.

& I thought that Tim Brandow was Tim Hartley (former 96 WHNN DJ who did both Rock & Adult Comtemporary) in the early 80's!!!

Have you heard "Lightning Strikes" on this station?

Corporately-owned stations like WILZ may not have anything to play but those options installed in their computer, based on what someone in rock programming up the line has decided will be there. "Dude (Looks Like A Lady"), "Janie's Got A Gun", "Living On The Edge", "Sweet Emotion", "Dream On", "Train Kept A Rollin'", those are all "top of the head" choices for Aerosmith, in my opinion.

For the sake of argument, Googling "Aerosmith Songs" gave 32 listings, none of which was "Lightning Strikes". I remember it, now that you have referenced it here and it's a good tune from them.

This is where Tim Hartley is at now, being a country bumpkin:

He looks nothing like, nor sounds like, Tim Brandow;

Just to add to the Timothy mix, there was also a Tim Hawkins at WQLZ 105.1 Cheboygan in the late 1980s as I recall. His real name is Tim Pulice, and he later joined WDET. He took over Frantic Ernie Durham's Saturday Night Rhythm and Blues show for a while after Ernie D passed away in 1992. He has since left radio from what I can gather.

I’ll guess Tim knows Aerosmith’s “Lightning Strikes” (as do I - I’ve got the album on vinyl from back in the day), but I’m guessing that WILZ doesn’t have it, or Corporate America won’t let them play it.

Who thinks that air talent has a say in what is played anymore? Even with a special feature such as this where the talent may have a smidgen of freedom to pick a song out of rotation, you are at the mercy of a selection of songs approved by the consultant in the playlist so you do the best you can.

I agree, and that's one of the top reasons (if not THE top reason) why radio has become so bland.
