WHPS 15.1

Post by windsor » Mon Sep 23, 2019 8:57 pm

Anyone else in the metro picking up WHPS formerly of rf33 now on rf15 for the repack???

I could barely pick it up on rf33 but this new signal is a blowtorch my way at 70% for a supposed low power.

Nothing to watch on it anyway, just a bitch session most of the time.Screws up ever seeing tropo of WEWS Clev. :barf

Hell yeah. I never got it on rf33 but now that they switched to rf15 I get it no problem. I thought it was the result of Tropo for a bit but now I actually get it permanently.

Definitely. I only got it once or twice when it was on RF33. A few days back I turned on RF15 expecting so see WEWS tropo only to be surprised to see WHPS.

For a Class A station their new transmitter is a true blowtorch.

My furthest DTV tropo: KDKA Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at 202 miles for three days in January 2017 and a night in September 2017 with only an Antennas Direct C2V!

Current setup: Antennas Direct C2Max (2018-present)

I get a pretty decent signal now.... it was VERY fuzzy in the analog era, and when it flash-cut to digital on 33, i never got that... i actually picked up WGRZ (NBC 2 Buffalo) a couple times!

but now that it's on UHF 15 in digital? clear as a bell!

Not a hint of any signal on RF15 inside the city limits (NW).Could be that my UHF split antenna panels are aimed from NE-NW, so If WHPS is still transmitting from Radio Place along I-96 I should be getting something from them off the back side regardless.

The new tower site is just north of where the Lodge and Davidson meet in Highland Park. Looks like Midland St on the map.

Oakland County resides within the pattern null. Still, predicted signal strength is decent in my location. Will see if I can pull it in over the next few days.

Is that WJLB's tower site they are using?

Thats the same direction Im pointed and pick it up with 60% signal.

But cant pick up WHNE LD rf20 while in that direction.

Also picking up sporadically WNWO Toledo rf23.Looks like a good bet that when WUDT vacates the freq WNWO will be 24/7 just like WGTE PBS rf29 now that Global is gone. :D

I just checked and you are correct, it is on the same tower as WJLB.

33-1 (15) WHPS-CD DETROIT, MI 395' DCA-PL 408' 15 kW DA

97.9B WJLB DETROIT, MI 367' FS-LIC 381' 18 kW ND
97.9B WJLB DETROIT, MI 472' FM-LIC 489' 50 kW ND

Thanks for the info, TVBobn. :)

Just for fun, I pulled up the station's web site yesterday and watched a little bit of its programming online.

It appears to mostly consist of talk shows hosted by community activists, nutjobs, and past & present politicians (those three categories are not necessarily mutually exclusive). Some sort of R&B music video show was wrapping up just as I logged on.

Years ago during the analog days they had some simulcasts with WHPR radio. Not sure if they still do.

I remember when they were on channel 68 airing The Box.

It's not really much of a "blowtorch", getting a low power station within 25 miles is standard.
