K'zoo / MKG / BC - Spring '19 Nielsens

Post by MWmetalhead » Thu Jul 25, 2019 8:15 am

Kalamazoo:
https://ratings.radio-online.com/content/arb251
- Nice recovery for 106.5 WVFM
- WCSG doesn't just have a ton of listeners in G.R., they also have significant strength in K'zoo!
- Unusually good showing (at least in 12+) for WKZO
- WKFR remains #1 by a mile
- WRKR scores a second softer-than-normal book in a row
- Poor showings for 96.5 Jack FM and Win 98.5; the ratings for Jack have got to be particularly disappointing
- No info for B93, 92.5 The Zoo, or Cool 101

Battle Creek:
https://ratings.radio-online.com/content/arb531
- WKFR, WRKR, WJXQ, and WWDK do not subscribe
- My guess is WKFR pulls stronger numbers than Win 98.5. Usually the top station in BC has at least a 15 share; Win 98.5 only scored a 12.3.
- Good book for 95.3 WBCK; another weak book for 104.9 The Edge (Classic Hits would be a much better use of that frequency).

Muskegon:
https://ratings.radio-online.com/content/arb566
- V100 is now #1!
- WMRR and WMUS continue to post weaker results than just five years ago; WMRR's result is particularly surprising considering WLAV-FM cannot be received in the Greater Muskegon area these days
- WWSN and Nash Icon are hot piles of garbage (92.5 The Outlaw scored MUCH better ratings back in the day)
- WOOD-FM is a non-subscriber; ditto WSNX, WHTS, WBCT, WGRD
- WLHT's repeated lack of ratings in Muskegon County is surprising considering it is one of the stronger GR-based signals in the region

I'd be curious as to whether the WCSG numbers are for 91.3 or for 88.3 WCXK. Perhaps a combo of both?

Kind of odd that WSRW and WBFX subscribe to Muskegon Nielsens while WOOD and WSNX (both of which are licensed to Muskegon) don't subscribe

It's a combo of all signals airing WCSG's programming.

Does it matter? Isn’t WCXK just a simulcast of WCSG?

Does anyone know how WQXC "Cool 101" tends to perform in the Kalamazoo market? I picked up the signal today from Ottawa County and was pleasantly surprised with their programming.

When they were listed in the K'zoo book, they generally were in the mid 2's in ages 12+.

Cool 101 has a surprisingly good signal in the Holland area.

I never understood why WQXC didn't increase its power to a full 6 kW. Seems to me they are sufficiently spaced vis-a-vis WTRV, WBYT (South Bend area), WITL (Lansing area), WWBR (Big Rapids) and WBFX to be able to do that.

About Jack: have they even done anything to promote it? When I was out there, I didn't see any billboards or any sort of advertising about the station. You'd think they'd want to promote the hell out of it...

It's a shame, because I think the station sounds pretty damn good.

Radio does a terrible job promoting itself and its own brands.

If I were an outside business - especially a local business - looking for proper marketing, I don't know why on earth I'd trust radio to do that job for me. Radio's incompetence at marketing itself is a bad reflection on the industry.

I noticed 2 billboards. There was one on WB 94 by Wings Event Center. And there was another one up on SB 131 by Plainwell I think. That one had the logo flipped upside down. But also, I think that one was outside the coverage area of the station.

That billboard on SB 131 is on the fringe of the signal area, but traveling southbound you would gain signal strength as you go. Smart move.
