Is cord-cutting (specifically OTA-only) hard for the Lansing area?

Post by Splouge » Thu Aug 08, 2019 1:59 pm

I live in Metro Detroit, and there are so many great diginets here I can't believe aren't in Lansing. And WLNS sharing with WLAJ didn't help matters. Here are some of my favorite diginets (and selected shows and my comments in parantheses) that aren't in Lansing.

GetTV (Sanford & Son, Grizzly Adams, Good Times. Removed after the WLNS-WLAJ fiasco, but is available nationally on Dish, and on Samsung TV Plus)

Cozi TV (The Office, The Nanny, Frasier. I've never understood why this one never came to Lansing, especially since they seem to be really big on being in every market!)

Laff (Home Improvement, That 70s Show, 3rd Rock. This one is understandable, as Laff focuses their attention mainly on the top 50 DMAs, I believe it is on Dish)

Quest (Modern Marvels, Auction Kings, How It's Made. A sister network to Justice Network, I'm sure it would be on WLAJ 53.4 if the channel sharing agreement didn't happen, since 53.3 was Justice)

Decades (Newhart, Family Affair, I Love Lucy. Again, this diginet doesn't really go big on trying to be in every market, especially since the "StartTV Slaughtering")

Those were just the diginets I watch regularly, but there are some other pretty major diginets that aren't in Lansing. Like Grit, Comet, and Escape. I'm honestly surprised WHTV never picked up any diginets when they were on the air.

What I'd like to know is, in the Lansing area, is OTA-only TV watching difficult with the lack of choices?

With an external rooftop antenna (i.e. old school antenna) in the Lansing-East Lansing area, some Flint, Saginaw, and Grand Rapids stations can likely be received

And with a rooftop antenna, most if not all of the aforementioned networks can be picked up from markets adjacent to Lansing. Reception, of course, will differ depending on location, nulls and surrounding structures, but the higher you can mount the antenna, the better your results will be. Best to use something with a rotatable directional element. Omni-directional saucers cost less but don't work as well as something you can point toward the station's transmitter.

If an outdoor antenna isn't an option (apartments, association restrictions, etc), the next best thing is an amplified indoor antenna located in an attic or near a window. Again, you want something that's easily adjustable (I would avoid panel antennas that tend to be mounted and stationary). Performance won't be nearly as good as an outdoor aerial at a decent height, but you should be able to pull in all the locals and maybe a few out-of-market stations.

Cozi TV is horseshit. The picture is so squished and grainy.

I've never noticed any problems with Cozi's picture.

Forget about getting Cozi in Jackson County, as the closest affiliates are the flea-powered WOBC-CD Battle Creek at 277 watts, with a 272 foot tower that is knee-high to a gopher turd. Or WMNT-CD which, even if it could be received there, I've heard the picture is shit. You must be watching Cozi on that station.

OK, from an Antennas Direct antenna pointed WNW at 40' 10 miles north of Jackson:
6-1
10-1-3
17-1-4
23-1-4
41-1-4
43-1-6
47-1-5
53-1-2
64-1-3

I didn't note what net is on what channel, but that's the channels that come in reliably.

That's a lot of free TV. I could live with that. Pay TV is just bloated with trash. Same shows over and over...most days you flip through the channels and nothing strikes your fancy. Then there are all the channels you don't even watch!
