Re: Texas mass shooting
I believe the AR 15 was designed for one purpose only. Mowing down people. There's no other reason to own one.
I don't mean to brag, but I just put a puzzle together in 1 day and the box said 2-4 years.

Re: Texas mass shooting
In terms of dealing with mental health issues relative to gun ownership, I'd be OK with a federal "red flag" law in lieu of my idea for widespread mental health screening for would-be gun buyers.
This idea appears to be gaining momentum, and it would be a major step in the right direction. Certainly would be better than "doing nothing."

Re: Texas mass shooting
A random thought...
Texas is an open carry state. Where were all the folks in the Walmart who were packing and did nothing?
I think this blows the NRA theory that a Clint Eastwood or Chuck Bronson would change the outcome.

Re: Texas mass shooting
I wasn't aware that 12 states already passed such laws. If the feds incentivize more states to pass such laws, I imagine that most would. In theory these sound like a reasonable way to get guns out of the hands of people who shouldn't have them, just so long as there is sufficient due process.MWmetalhead wrote: ↑Mon Aug 05, 2019 6:37 pmIn terms of dealing with mental health issues relative to gun ownership, I'd be OK with a federal "red flag" law in lieu of my idea for widespread mental health screening for would-be gun buyers.

Glad you & I were able to find common ground on this most important of topics.

Re: Texas mass shooting
Now good luck getting politicians on exact opposite ends of the political spectrum to find common ground on this. I suspect enough people on the right could be found who would support some form of this - I'm not so confident people on the left, however, will be onboard without concurrently doing lots of other gun control measures.MWmetalhead wrote: ↑Mon Aug 05, 2019 9:29 pmGlad you & I were able to find common ground on this most important of topics.

Mitch McConnell is blocking two sensible laws right now.bmw wrote: ↑Mon Aug 05, 2019 10:29 pmNow good luck getting politicians on exact opposite ends of the political spectrum to find common ground on this. I think we should ban shooting computer games with life-like figures. That glorifies shooting people.
Ask not what your country can do FOR you; ask what they are about to do TO YOU!!

Every other country has those games, but not the weekly mass shootings.

Re: Texas mass shooting
While I personally could care less whether life-like violent video games were banned, that would be a slippery slope if I ever saw one - from movies, to tv, to other forms of violence on all entertainment mediums. I think it doesn't speak well of our culture that this kind of thing sells as well as it does, but I think the entertainment industry should remain largely unregulated as far as content.

Re: Texas mass shooting
I guess we could exclude socialist utopia Venezuela, they have no power half the time. Of course they killing each just for food despite banning of guns. https://thehill.com/opinion/campaign/38 ... icide-rate The Venezuelan capital of Caracas had a homicide rate of 122 per 100,000 inhabitants, nearly 20 times the global average of 6.2. By comparison, the U.S. homicide rate in 2015 was 4.9; the U.S. gun homicide rate was 3.03 (based on calculation from the FBI Uniform Crime Reports).
Greektown, Toronto 3 (including the gunman) The 29-year-old gunman, Faisal Hussain, shot 10 people before fatally shooting himself. An 18-year-old woman was pronounced dead after she was taken to the hospital from gunshot wounds, and a critically injured 10-year-old girl was also pronounced dead after being taken to hospital.[31]

Re: Texas mass shooting
You're right, man. You've laid it all out in black and white. Even after we subtract the deaths that were the result of acts of war. Even after we take out the stabbings, the poisonings and the deaths by arson. Even after we deduct the vehicular homicides and the scabs who died in a mine explosion, we're still left with 18 mass shootings in the last 200 years. It's gotta be the video games.audiophile wrote: ↑Mon Aug 05, 2019 11:58 pmI guess we could exclude socialist utopia Venezuela, they have no power half the time. Couldn't have anything to do with Canada's lax gun laws.

Re: Texas mass shooting
A nation of 37 million vs a nation of 327 million might explain some of the difference in the number of events. Canada also has less cultural diversity and is more rural. Canada is safer.
Canada intentional homicide rank is 91 and the USA is 94:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_c ... icide_rate
Both nations are fairly safe overall, that isn't to say there isn't a few trouble spots and we should be happy with it. I do not believe right to bare arms mean weapons with multi-round clips. The founders had no concept of that weapon when they wrote it.
