93.9 station "skip".

Post by Y M Ionhere » Sat Jul 20, 2019 6:08 pm

Today, around 3:20 PM, i was near 13 Mile and Woodward when The River started breaking up and being overcome with interference from an urban/ hot ac-sounding station. It only happened for a minute or 2. I suspect it was a weather-related station skip.
Any idea what station it might have been? I couldnt identitify the songs but they had a sort of hip-hop feel.

Probably Wild 93.9 from Lima.

At 96 and 23, 94.7 was getting overrun by someone playing that Sam Smith song that sounds like Free Fallin'. Anyone help with that one?

Not Lima.

There was a FANTASTIC Sporadic-E skip opening today.
You most likely heard a station from the Southern or Southeastern US.

I heard several FM stations in a band from MS to CO, even 107.9 had several stations battling it out.

When I arrived back home, I saw three TV stations that actually transmit on the VHF Low Band. KNOP 2 North Platte NE, KDLO 3 Watertown SD, and KHME 2 Rapid City SD (23.1, using KOTA's old channel 2 transmitter).

What I could hear briefly tangled up with The River seemed to fit the format of KISS aka Wild in Lima.
I had one skip about 15 years ago near 75 and 696 way up on the dial (around 106 or 107) from a hip hop station in Cleveland.
In the days when the police and fire departments used analog systems, Id pick up Cleveland PD skips on rare occasions. I picked up Lucas County Police in Novi for a small time one morning and during a few other occasions picked up Berrien County. with the exception of Lucas County, most skips tended to be from the east or west of my location, not north-south.

Seems like a real long shot but if the spectrum skip was THAT good I guess its worth considering:

WIOT was getting overrun in Canton by a “104.7 The Bear”. Only one I could find was way down in Texas, which seems far.

TX stations are heard in Michigan regularly during e-skip.

I still think Lima cannot be ruled out. Ohio stations have been booming into Detroit periodically over the past few days. I was picking up 103.7 from Tiffin with city grade strength last night around Midnight. It was actually coming in much more strongly than WIOT. Full quieting, stereo signal on a Sony clock radio.

I live near 14 Mile and Woodward by the Royal Oak and Birmingham border.

Driving In northeast Michigan, I was listening to 98.7 KISD In Minnesota. At first I thought it was a new station, then I assumed it was a pirate - streaming. It must be the atmosphere after all.

I would be beyond shocked. That's pushing it 😆

I already live in a fairly open area so I've been getting some catches I've never seen before. I still don't have power so I can't really see what's going on on the dial.

FM Broadcast Band signals don't skip from Ohio to Michigan. They "Trop".

Such a signal carries in the troposphere, where the air is dense enough that any free ions will quickly reunite with atoms.

Radio waves travel faster in dry air than they do in humid air, that causes the radio wave to bend along the curvature of the earth.

At very high altitudes, electrons can be separated from their nuclei, and the free electrons can reflect signals back to earth.

In Sporadic-E propagation, an ionized layer may form about 100km over the earth, creating what amounts to a "Natural communications satellite".

Path distances of 1200-2000 km are commonplace when " E-skip" occurs.

On the FM Broadcast Band, an Es path less than 1100km is rare.

On my way to work from South Lyon to Howell @ 3:30 pm yesterday, I experienced E-skip on 104.3 and 106.7...combination of the heat, humidity, and atmospheric conditions. On my way back home, after the cold-front passed thru, reception on these 2 stations was back to normal, with no fluctuation whatsoever.

I may have posted this before, but this is 89x getting beat up by KUHF from Houston. This was at Riverland and Van Dyke in Sterling Heights in July of 2010. Still the best skip I've ever gotten. Strong enough for an HD lock.

Another possible culprit for 93.9:

93.9 WMIA from Miami, FL. I've picked up that station in SE Michigan before.

E-skip is 100km in the sky. Heat at ground level has no effect on it.

It occurs at the solstices, with the June solstice having a lot of E-skip in the north and some E-skip in the Southern Hemisphere.
The December solstice is the peak E-skip season in the Southern Hemisphere, though the lack of large land masses and a smaller pool of radio enthusiasts results in only moderate activity. The December solstice also provides a "secondary season" in the Northern Hemisphere, bringing skip back for a couple of months, oddly known for bringing openings into Canada in the middle of the night.
