Has WCXI 1160 moved to Milford Twp?

Post by fuzzpower » Tue Jun 25, 2019 9:56 pm

Today in Canton, what is normally a faint signal on 1160 was coming in loud and clear, even stopping on seek mode in the car. Has 1160 moved, or is this just a freak occurrence?

1460 was still blank.

Yes. They must have been testing at the new site. But at my RL 30 miles away, and near the pattern maximum, if they're running directional, the signal was only in the 0.5 mV/m range, and didn't stop the scan on the Delco in my Buick. So I don't know what they are running power wise.

Here is your answer:

https://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.ex ... _num=10475

Exhibits
Exhibit 14
Description: MODE OF OPERATION

ON SUNDAY, JUNE 23, 2019, WCXI EXPERIENCED A FAILURE OF ITS MAIN TRANSMITTER AT ITS LICENSED LOCATION. THE LICENSED LOCATION DOES NOT HAVE AN AUXILIARY OR BACKUP TRANSMITTER. THE MAIN TRANSMITTER IS AN OLDER MODEL AND THE FAILED COMPONENT IS SCARCE AND DIFFICULT TO OBTAIN.

WCXI HOLDS AN AUTHORIZATION FOR CONSTRUCTION OF AN IMPROVED FACILITY WITH A POWER INCREASE. ALTHOUGH MUCH OF THE CONSTRUCTION FOR THE NEW FACILITY HAS BEEN COMPLETED, IT IS NOT YET READY FOR LICENSING. IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN SERVICE TO THE PUBLIC, WCXI IS REQUESTING SPECIAL TEMPORARY AUTHORITY TO OPERATE IN NON-DIRECTIONAL MODE FROM ONE OF THE TOWERS AT THE AUTHORIZED CONSTRUCTION PERMIT SITE. IN ACCORDANCE WITH SECTION 73.1615(B)(3), AUTHORITY IS REQUESTED TO OPERATE DAY AND NIGHT AT 25% OF THE LICENSED POWER.
Attachment 14

Exhibit 16
Description: STA REQUEST

AS DISCUSSED WITH FCC STAFF, THE TRANSMITTER AT THE CURRENT LICENSED SITE FOR WCXI HAS FAILED. THE STATION IS IN THE PROCESS OF RELOCATING AND THE NEW SITE IS FUNCTIONAL FOR THE STA OPERATIONS. THE LICENSEE RESPECTFULLY REQUESTS OPERATIONS AT 250 WATTS NON-DIRECTIONAL FOR A PERIOD OF 180 DAYS. WITHIN THAT TIME PERIOD A LICENSE TO COVER THE NEW TRANSMITTER SITE WILL HAVE BEEN FILED AND THIS STA WILL BECOME MOOT.

I noticed that they were off. What caused the transmitter failure? I didn't say this, someone else just said "Sledgehammer" and they weren't requesting Peter Gabriel. :rollin

It's not a 4-125A by any chance?

Since the STA is omnidirectional, I'd try it - during the day (at night, 1160 in Michigan will sound like 1400).

Thanks for the tip. I'll check it out in the morning then.

There's no way they could have put 0.5 mV/m 30 miles East with 250 watts nondirectional. For testing purposes, they could use 3.75 kW nondirectional, and that makes more sense. Especially since the LICENSED WPON 1460 Daytime array three miles closer with 1 kW directional to the East wasn't anywhere near that. That was the equivalent of 5 kW to the East. And it was no more than about 0.25 mV/m. It was reduced to 250 watts after testing was done, and that was a much weaker FI.

There’s no way they are operating at just 250 watts. I was even picking them up somewhat at night (mixed with WYLL) in Canton.

Their carrier was blank today when I was in Farmington Hills. Still nothing on 1460.

Yesterday, the signal was iffy but better than it's been recently in my neck of the woods. I was listening in the Southfield, Berkley and Beverly Hills areas in the car.

Indoor reception sucks, but in the car it came in just well enough to lock in on seek mode much of the time. Reception was a bit weaker than 1090 from Garden City.

I'm guessing they were indeed using 250 watts omni from Milford.

My experience is that it was coming in better from Fenton after they apparently fixed the transmitter, for a while. The good news is that they could probably use 50000 watts from the new site. The bad news is, it still won't get out that well. Reminds me of WIVK 850 Knoxville. The Class IVs came in better.

The last few days WCXI has been off the air from the new site. WPON hasn't been testing for over three weeks so both stations are off. Since I'm only about two miles from the new transmitting site I can clearly tell when they're up and running or off for whatever reason.
