Why So Much 80’s?

Post by Deleted User 14992 » Tue Apr 23, 2019 4:23 pm

How many stations in Detroit do we need that the main playlists have to be 80’s, Don’t get me wrong I love The 80’s but here’s who does 80’s too much WCSX, WDZH, WNIC, WRIF, WOMC and WLLZ. Someone needs to back off a bit on the 80’s but who, WCSX you’re a Classic Rock Station the 80’s you play are not Classic Rock, WDZH you’re Soft A/C do more 90’s and 00’s, WNIC you actually sound good and are where you should be, WRIF get rid of all your Classic Rock songs and start becoming a station for today’s young adults, WOMC stop repeating the same 104 songs and get off the 80’s kick WNIC has that market and start finding a better direction your ratings are beginning to slip, And finally WLLZ truly you need to become “The Next Generation Of Classic Rock” That means no 70’s or 80’s your playlist should be 1990-2010. What are your thoughts?

O.K.,Chuck,but rock had started to suck circa 1995,so there's no rock "golden age" from 1990-2010 .

the 80's obsession was in the 2000s, when all the Variety Hits stations popped up and played the decade to it's grave.
Now these songs are old and stale and annoying.

when do we get a 70s obsession?

There was a 60's obsession in the 90s, then 80s in the 2000s, and 2010s..

What is wrong with the 70s????

97.1 was a 70s station about two decades ago and it flopped.

All 70's was a fad format like jammin oldies and all 80s. Star had a good run but ran it's course.

A lot of 80s to an extent, at least the pop music of it, has grown stale.

Most stale songs:

If you leave- OMG ugh... I hate this song
don't you forget about me- Simple minds
down under- men at work

Just to name a few

Earlier than that.
They started selling boatloads of 80s compilation cds in the mid-90s. Including special sets sold via tv commercials. Thats also around the time I started hearing the 80s throwback-type shows on radio stations. Stuff like "all-80s weekends" came to fruition around the early 2000s,but that seed was planted around 1995.

What year was 96.3 an all-80s station? I want to say 1999 or 2000...

I believe the Alternative Classics Format was in ‘96 and ‘97 but I’m not sure.

The obsession with 80's music started even in the early 90's. When 88.7 the Cutting Edge of Rock started in 1990 the core of the play list was New Wave, Post Punk, and Alt Rock of the 80's. I remember Industries in Pontiac started Homesick night which played songs that were 5 years or older right around 1990. Mostly New Wave, Post Punk, and Hi NRG tunes, I know that isn't radio but showed there was a demand. Once 89X went full Grunge and Alt Rock, Planet 96.3 picked up the 80's New Wave slack starting around 96 through to the 2000s.

The Soft Rock and AC stations always had a soft spot for the Top 40 of the 80's and not sure not sure if there was really a time when these type of tunes weren't part of the rotation in someway. Heavy Metal and Hair Metal have also been a stable of Rock stations and Classic Rock stations. Not sure about Urban, R&B, Hip Hop, or Country stations never listen to them long enough to know what makes up their playlist.

It would be interesting to see if WLLZ can hold a spot in the ratings only playing the Next Generation of Classic Rock starting with Hair Metal, Grunge, Post Grunge, and Butt Rock. Cutting out the Arena Rock, Heavy Metal, and Blues Rock they are mixing in currently.

Is 80's the last decade of "pop" music before it really segmented into so many sub-genres and formats? For instance today, pop music could be Drake or the Jonas Brothers or some pop-country artist, and you typically either like one or the other, whereas in the past, pop was pop and it had a more mass appeal, making a general "80's format" more viable. Is that possible?

96.3 became alt classic's in early fall of 99, By Spring 2000, the station started moving back towards Modern AC. The Planet name was dropped soon after.

Around the time Disco lost popularity, MTV hit the scene. MTV became a vehicle for rock that was both rhythmic and melodic.
For a few years, there was a rebirth of top 40.
Then Rap and Grunge replaced it all. Many people liked neither.
Mid-1980s pop had some similarities to Mid-1960s music
Of course, advertisers avoided 60s music like the plague, so 80s is what plays.

We need a 90's channel now!!!!!! There's so much greatness from hair bands, to alternative, to pop, to rap, to country. That era was so diverse with all genres selling massive amounts of albums. Now, it's rap and pop on the charts.

Still waiting for the all 70s obsession that never happened.

There was "60s and 70s" and "70s and 80s"..
But we didn't get a full blown 70s obsession.
