Clueless meteorologists in West Michigan

Post by MWmetalhead » Sun Apr 21, 2019 9:21 am

They're all going to get today's forecast wrong by a mile.

The mid level drying illustrated on the models isn't going to materialize. There is little to no surface ridging. There is a disturbance approaching from the northwest.

It will be mostly cloudy at best most of the day in the G.R. area. Might see partly cloudy late in the day.

Much of the midday and early afternoon hours will hang in the 50s.

I think highs will be in the low or mid 60s, and it will take all day to get there.

Not low 70s and mostly sunny/partly cloudy like these fools on 3, 8, and 13 are all forecasting!!!

The GFS model shows highs ranging from 63 to 68. ICON model 61 to 67. No trace of 70s to be found.

Oh, and the weather forecasting is 10x worse in Northeast Michigan - it never ceases to amaze me how the effects of Lake Huron get overlooked in the forecast models. So many times we miss the forecast highs by 10 to 20 degrees.

I may have to eat my words!!! (That won't make for a good Easter dinner...LOL.)

South end of Metro GR has seen decent clearing within the last hour.

Latest vis sat shows rapid clearing in southern lower in last 30 minutes. Thrilled that the skies have cleared and temps have warmed.

Day is still young. We will see who is proven correct once the day is through. My guess is the high temp will be warmer than I thought but not quite as warm as the TV folks thought. On sky conditions, they have a decent shot of a decisive victory, though. :)

That's why they are meteorologists and we are mere mortals. It's not nice to fool Mother Nature

I would like my crow bbq'd please.

(Everything tastes better that way!)

I tip my cap to the professional weather geeks. Other than for a few hours of mid and high level clouds this morning, they nailed it! I - on the other hand - was way off the mark.

It's been sunny almost all day in Reed City. 6 pm temperatures were 72 in Big Rapids and 75 in Cadillac.

It's usually smarter to wait til at least early afternoon to bash the forecast :).

Twas 70 and clear here in Fremont on Saturday and 75 and clear on Sunday. Though looking toward the southeast on Saturday as they sat all day in the low 40s... whew, that had to suck for them!

This is pure insanity if this snowstorm materializes. GFS models projecting upwards of a foot of snow in some parts of the lower peninsula Saturday night into Sunday:

Yup. I knew something was amiss when my Google weather app (which sources local weather forecasts from The Weather Channel) was calling for snow showers in Oakland County late Saturday night into Sunday morning!

The cool, crappy weekends in SE Michigan are becoming rather tiresome at this point. There was a 25 degree temperature differential between Grand Rapids and Detroit this past Saturday afternoon! Thankfully, I spent the second half of my day Saturday in Grand Rapids. :)
