Early Spring Tropo Reports

The technical side of broadcasting. Think IBOC is a sham? Talk about it here! How about HDTV? Post DX reports here as well.

Early Spring Tropo Reports

Post by cckadlec » Tue Apr 16, 2019 11:18 pm

Good day.

Conditions have been favorable the past few days here in West Michigan. Despite the 11" of snow here in Fremont, signals were still falling from the heavens (or refracting off the basement of heaven anyway). Tuesday night has been much better though.

With WMOM gone, WRVM has easily taken its place at 161 miles tonight with stereo, full RDS, on seek, and interfering with WFUR. Lately it has been a mix of Chicago, Suring, and Detroit, though I have heard Super Hits (KYTC) multiple times since WMOM went off while just wandering around with the portable.

Conditions largely to the north are best tonight.

Razor 94-7 is in great, Rock 105 & 95.5 (both), blasting WBDK in stereo, great signal of loud silence from News 97 & 98 (good job, guys) as usual but way stronger, 98.1 The Bear, 99.7 Duke in stereo, 100.5 //WRVM, 103.1 WOGB strong, 103.3 The Family in well, 103.7 strong Grand Rapids on the car radio (rare even on the portable, first time in the car!), 103.9 WVBO in quite fine, 105.7 WAPL walloping Grand Rapids, strong silence on 92.3 over Power (no doubt WBNZ), 93 Rock in well, 93.5 Duke good, 93.9 WDOR strong, 96.9 K-Love (Sheboygan) in the null of Drive, with others not mentioned.

None of those are anything special (find recordings of all of them as typically heard here), but it's better than, well, winter dead band...

Conditions are limited mainly along the coast. Escanaba is quiet and inland GLQ is barely there even! 96.5 Big Rapids has been off for a few months now - no idea what they were doing, why, and if they'll come back (it'd be pointless really).

Nice to hear something either way.

106.5 KCQQ + local FM106.5
107.5 107-5 The Rock + Hot
107.7 The Wave + VCY

103.7 takes the cake. Hallie is dominant, but numerous signals with IDs fading up/down, in/out, all around. The Beat Muskegon, WRTS Erie, we-give-a-full-legal-ID-after-every-single-song WSJH Hubbardston, Cosy, CKY, Classic Hits 103-7, and Positive Country all within a bit more than 5 minutes. That's 9 of the 10 signals I regularly hear during strong tropo on the frequency.

With CBON in, I tried for the other usuals up that way (if 101-9 Rock is in, it's covered in stupid IBOC), but most of the big ones are on very local frequencies. And I haven't noted 101-9 Rock here in a few years due to that fact.

Of course, the tropo map is down. Go figure.

I was getting some okay tropo up north last night and early this morning. Just the usual Wisconsin lakeshore, Grand Rapids and NE Michigan stuff. Nothing too special.

At 10am check, still really good conditions, though kinda lost the excitement of it by now.

Mostly the same stations, but not much over 250 miles. 97.1 is especially empty - weak Cow 97 and The Fan Columbus. No GLQ or The Drive! Under these oddball conditions, I'd check for WDBS, but alas, no sign of it. And no FXD, KFR, or Sheboygan on 103.3; just GLX. Otherwise, the typical Quad Cities and Northwoods stations, none of which are that typical aside from good conditions. In another month, lake tropo will start blasting and I will look upon these DX exploits as a waste of time.

The tropo forecast shows this breaking up soon, so I'll probably just go about my business (sleeping).

The FM band was going crazy here in Washtenaw County last night. Many Detroit stations and several locals were getting thrashed by Indiana, Toronto and even Chicago. Here are some highlights, all received with an Eton Grundig III with factory antenna and/or portable Insignia HD receiver.

88.1 WVPE Elkhart locked in HD
89.9 WRRO Edon OH and WYBV Wakarusa IN taking out CBE
90.9 WGBE Bryan OH and WCFG Springfield/BC (*new catch*) taking out WRCJ
91.1 WRUW Cleveland overpowering WFUM completely
91.3 WCSG like a ton of bricks; I had to null out WCSG in order to hear WGTE
92.1 Jewel 92 Brantford (RDS)
92.3 The Fort Fort Wayne mixing with WKRK; no sign of WMXD at all
92.5 The Zoo Mattawan/K'zoo (RDS) (*new catch*)
92.7 The useless WAAM translator was broadcasting dead air for part of the night, but they eventually must have gone off the air since BX93 started pounding in like a local.
92.9 U93 South Bend fighting with usual WLMI
93.5 CBC Radio 1 London completely taking out WHMI
94.1 CBC Music Toronto
94.3 CKSY and WZOC were fighting with an unID playing "1979" by Smashing Pumpkins. Probably WKKI Celina?
94.5 WKLQ Holland/GR (first time log with new format)
94.7 WCVM Bronson in WCSX null
Energy 95-3 Hamilton flashing in HD
95.9 FM96 London and WLKM Three Rivers fighting with CJWF
96.3 XKE Churubusco/Ft Wayne (RDS) overpowering WDVD; later CFMZ Toronto in WDVD null
96.5 Z96-5 Lafayette IN (*new catch*) mixing with Jack FM Kalamazoo
96.7 CHYM Kitchener (RDS), no sign of usuals CHYR/WUFN
97.3 WMEE flashing in HD
97.9 WGRD and unID CCM station (probably WGNR) fighting with WJLB
Star 98.3 Winchester IN (*new catch*)
K99.1 Dayton fighting with WFMK and WFRO
99.9 Virgin Radio Toronto (*new catch*) and Live 99.9 Benton Harbor; no sign of WKKO or Praise Network
100.5 The River Grand Rapids (*new catch*) along with WKXA and WSGW-FM
100.9 mix of WBNO, WMJK and CBLA-3
101.7 The One Wingham (RDS)
102.3 ALT 102.3 Auburn/Fort Wayne (RDS)
103.5 Z103-5 Orangeville/Toronto in WMUZ null (RDS)
103.7 Cosy South Haven (*new catch*) in WCKY null
104.9 unID station playing Janet Jackson "Miss You Much". WBXX was dominating along with a little WQBX. WERK Muncie perhaps?
105.1 K105 Huntertown/Ft Wayne (RDS) in WMGC null
105.3 Virgin Radio Kitchener (RDS), also caught a hint of a country station which I'm presuming was WKOA
105.9 WCFS Chicago (*new catch*) in WDMK null
106.1 Magic 106 Guelph in WJXQ null
106.3 Redeemer Radio Columbia City/Ft Wayne (RDS)
Big 106.5 Greenville/Dayton - in null of dominant WVFM
106.7 Real Country Hicksville OH in WDTW null - first time log with new format
107.9 WENZ Cleveland (RDS) and WJFX Fort Wayne; no sign of WCRZ or W300CO

Here in Tawas City the DX is VERY strong from Detroit/Canada - some of the strongest I've heard in years, especially from the London area. 95.9 CFPL is normally buried between 95.7 (Oscoda) and 96.1 (Saginaw) but tonight it is the strongest of the 3 stations. Also 93.5 is showing full 7/7 signal bars and is adjacently knocking 93.3 (z93) right out of the water.
