Most distant AM/FM/TV signal you ever tuned in?

The technical side of broadcasting. Think IBOC is a sham? Talk about it here! How about HDTV? Post DX reports here as well.

Can’t forget CBK 540 always a great catch. I have received that one numerous times. And WWL 870 New Orleans, WBAP 820 Dallas and more recently KCJJ 1630 Iowa City, Iowa.

How about best AM DX with a crystal set ?
I heard KXEL in Iowa and WCKY in Cinci on a crystal receiver, and well enough to connect to an audio amp and hear loud on a big HI-FI speaker ! :D

I listened to KFI back in the 80's when I was up in Saginaw one night.

On the TV side, in western Wayne Co. with an outdoor antenna up 40 feet, I watched KXAS out of Dallas, and KENS in San Antonio battle each other back and forth on channel 5 back in the analog days of the 90's.

Also in western Saginaw Co I listened to Y 95 (WYNF) in my car out of Tampa sometime in the 80's. At first I thought it was WVIC in Lansing when they were on that frequency but, I knew that WVIC didn't play Jimmy Hendricks tunes with their format back then. When the All Along The Watchtower was over they ID the station and I was shocked to hear Tampa in my car. WWRM are the current call letters

Most of us were introduced to Crystal Set DX by accident. Usually it happens with the 8-16 years old experimenter who has received or built a crystal type set. We should have realized that AM BC DX was possible when the "Voice Of America signing off from Greenville, North Carolina" started coming thrrough our 2K Headphones or Earphones. With a 100+ foot antenna, I started to notice that every once in a while, a Top 40 station would suddenly be heard on our headphones, then disappear suddenly before being IDed. Took me a long time to figure out that it was WCFL 1000 and/or WOWO 1190 (Sacrificed for WLIB). The way I figured, with a good 1N34 Ge Diode, there needed to be about 5 mV/m skywave to overcome the voltage drop threshold necessary for conduction, at least with my setup. Since WLS's signal is Nondirectional and the tower is 190 degrees electrical height, this would almost never be possible in SE Michigan.

How about getting radio on something other than a radio, When I lived in Southgate in the 60’s, I was less than a mile from AM 1500’s towers they had twelve of them when it was WJBK radio and we heard the station with two pie tins separated by waxed paper, Also on a toaster in our kitchen we would also pick them up. It’s Not DX’ing but it is Weird but true. Just wanted to share that.

I've heard stories of people getting radio signals on their tooth fillings.

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it.

I can remember before they got rid of half the towers, you could drive down London between Dix and 75, and 1500 would come in for just about a second no matter where the radio was.
People that live along the fence in the subdivision west of WJR tell me the same stories you are saying about AM1500.

I think there are 9 towers left for 1500, It’s been a while since I’ve seen them. Also I remember being able to see WKNR’s towers from a distance at night and not being able to receive Keener 13 at all in the nighttime. And I can’t forget WJR’s one tower from Riverview, I was able to see that one at night as well.

You are correct in that 1500 (which is now WLQV) still has those nine towers. They once had an additional set closer to Dix-Toledo that was taken out to make room for a Super Kmart, which was eventually converted into a Meijer.

My furthest DTV tropo: KDKA Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at 202 miles for three days in January 2017 and a night in September 2017 with only an Antennas Direct C2V!

Current setup: Antennas Direct C2Max (2018-present)

AM: 850 KOA Denver, CO or 870 WWL New Orleans, LA
FM Tropo: 102.3 KRNY Kearney, NE and 105.9 KQKY Kearney, NE (684 miles, both on the same tower; I've had KRNY twice and KQKY once)
FM E-skip: 99.5 KKPS Brownsville, TX (1,408 miles)

Most distant from my home site (Fremont):

I don't keep running logs for my US site, but I have kept seasonal and event logs in the past, which include my longest catches. I think like most people who do TV (I stopped after 2010), my longest catches are the regular Colombians and the Venezuelan Televen siren everyone started to catch starting immediately after the US analogs switched off in 2009. Those stations were in numerous times.

Tr 106.3 KFRX NE Lincoln / CHR / 100kw (578 mi.) / 2018
Es 3 Televen siren / Coro, Venezuela / 2x Es (2420 mi.) / 2009, 2010
Es 4 Caracol / Santa Marta, Colombia / 2x Es (2369 mi) / 2010
Es Ch. 2 KCBS CA Los Angeles (1832 mi.) 2x Es / 2008

Longest single hop FM was one of the Salt Lake City ones (1340 mi.), but forget which year - my US stuff is still pretty scattered right now. Longest single hop TV was one of the Idaho ones at about 1450 miles back in the day. My only super-detailed log (minute-by-minute even) was the 2008 season, but others were separated by year including FM and TV Es.

and from my home site in Korea (all logs detailed and complete with audio):

Tr top 5 (on MP3 player, then portable Grundig from 2015 onward):

(589 mi.) / regular catch
93.7 JS Nanjing 江蘇 南京 / Jiangsu News Radio 江苏新闻广播 (586 mi.) / 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014

Es top 5 (on MP3 player, then portable Grundig from 2015 onward):

90.5 SB Lahad Datu, Malaysia / RTM TraXX FM / 2x Es (2344 mi.) / 2014
102.5 SB Kota Belud, Malaysia / RTM TraXX FM / 2x Es (2288 mi.) / 2014
88.75 SRN Surin สุรินทร์ สุรินทร์, Thailand / New Life Radio Surin / 2x Es (2104 mi.) / 2011

AM radio (regular stations log is here.)

It's pretty rare to get any *new* stations aside from the norm as the band is ridiculously cluttered to the max.

1575 Rasom, Thailand (VOA) was my most distant nightly catch at 2258 miles
1269 Xuanwei (CRI) was a distant second for regular stations at 1550 miles but only 600kw

Michigan site - I haven't bothered with AM nonsense here in ages, but KOA was likely the most distant nightly regular. The solar disturbance of autumn 2005 had Mexico and Cuba in for multiple days across the entire dial with few English stations - even locals - heard, so my longest would have come out of that mess.

For me the furthest AM is probably PBJ 800 from Bonaire, though in the 60's also heard Belize at 833, and YNKW at 875 from Managua, Nicaragua. Also heard a Spanish broadcast on 700 behind WLW, never able to verify the station, but suspect Quito. About 15 years ago heard KILT at 100.3 from Houston as far north as Dundee. On TV once received WFMJ channel 21 from Youngstown in Traverse City.

AM: Heard "Rainy Days And Mondays" on 567kHz presunrise, followed by an announcer with an Irish accent, but no ID; years ago a Venezuelan on 540 after CBK signed off for the night; KFI, and a 1000w station in the San Francisco area on 1640 when it was the only thing in the world on the frequency.

SW: a Ham in Hobart, Tasmania on 40m (He heard me, too), Not long ago, Radio Australia from Shepparton on 9850 would come in with a very strong signal around sunrise. I could listen to it in the skyscraper I was working in.

TV: BBC1 Crystal Palace and uniform TF1 French AM audios, and the very strong video buzzes on 45.00, 48.25 and 49.75 - I lacked any multi-standard to see them. In fact, EVERYBODY in the WTFDA with access to a radio that could tune the band could hear them easily (this was 1979/80).

From Iosco County:

Picked up KTCL 93.3 Denver, Colorado over riding Z93 WKQZ in Oscoda
On the TV side, picked up a Cleveland TV station (TV5?) clear as a bell one night prior to the digital switch in Tawas
