CanCon You Like, CanCon You Don't Like

A place to go for those of you who wish to discuss happenings in OH, IN, IL, WI, and Ontario. OSU sucks, by the way.

A couple of my faves, many of which I used to hear on CFCO and some of which are still heard on CKWW and CHOK:

The Cooper Brothers - "The Dream Never Dies" (almost a US Top 40 hit), "I'll Know Her When I See Her", "Show Some Emotion". One of them later became a writer for "You Can't Do That on Television" (which also featured a young Alanis Morissette) and was made in the band's hometown of Ottawa.
Sherry Kean - "I Want You Back"
The Staccatos - "Half Past Midnight"
Ginette Reno - "Beautiful Secondhand Man"
The Stampeders - "Minstrel Gypsy", "Carry Me", their remake of "Hit the Road Jack" featuring Wolfman Jack (they were much more than "Sweet City Woman")
David Roberts - "Boys of Autumn" (great yacht rock track, he's described by some as Canada's Christopher Cross)
Marc Jordan - "Survival"
Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers - "Does Your Mama Know About Me"
Lisa Dal Bello - "Pretty Girls" (covered by Melissa Manchester who had a minor hit with it in 1979); she also sang on Boz Scaggs' "Miss Sun"

Motherlode's "When I Die" has already been mentioned but bears repeating because it's one hell of a great song.

Canada's given us some great dance and disco music as well, including:
The Raes - "A Little Lovin' (Keeps the Doctor Away)" and their discofied remake of Doris Day's "Que Sera Sera"
Candi - "Dancing Under a Latin Moon"
Nancy Martinez - "For Tonight" (dance singer from Montreal; she cracked the Billboard Top 40 with this one)
Eria Fachin - "Savin' Myself" (R.I.P.)
France Joli - "Come to Me" (possibly first Quebecois female singer to crack the U.S. Top 40, more than a decade before Celine Dion, plus she was only 16 at the time)

As for Cancon I don't like... NICKELBACK tops the list. (I have no problem with Bryan, Anne or Celine.)

I used to get so excited when the Sherry Kean song would play on CKUE "Lite-FM"

I never hear it anywhere now

Which is another reason radio sucks. Lots of prolific bands are known for one or two songs because lazy PDs ( and ,to be fair, soulless corporate radio conglomerates ) want especially younger listeners to think these groups are basically one-hit wonders, though I haven't the foggiest why .

Nice Eli Whitney reference,EnbyCee .( In 1793,Whitney invented the cotton gin,a device which facilitated the harvesting of cotton, thus extending slavery's reign of terror over African Americans such as my great-great-great-grandparents,for another 72 years.)

My two favorite BS&T tunes are “I Can’t Quit Her” and “I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know” From The Album “Child Is The Father To The Man” A 1968 release and I believe their first.

Are BS&T really Canadian?

If Ann Arbor is close enough, this remake may count.

I believe Emily was French Canadian, does that count?

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

Steve,I saw John Kay (who'll be 75 Apr. 12,the same day my cousins Donnie and Ronnie Turner will be 66;they're three months older than I ) AND Steppenwolf at Caesar's Windsor in June 2015 with my buddy Jamie Logsdon, and the boys were GREAT !!!! They closed with their still-timely hit,"Monster," about the late 60's tumult in the U.S. and worldwide, which unfortunately is reappearing with the rise of nationalism .
