Aurora Borealis AM BCB DX Pilots

The technical side of broadcasting. Think IBOC is a sham? Talk about it here! How about HDTV? Post DX reports here as well.

Aurora Borealis AM BCB DX Pilots

Post by Arthur Mometer » Sat Mar 23, 2019 11:32 pm

The Northern Lights have been predicted tonight.

Some of my predictive DX Pilots. Signs of impending display.

All nearby stations will have nearly Daytime signal condiions (Groundwave) with Night facilities. Here's some to note in SE MI.

600 WSNL No cochannel QRM from WMT and CKAT.
730 WVFN No cochannel QRM. 1160 WCXI. No WYLL QRM. 1230 WMPC No QRM. 1240 WJIM. WTRX 1330. WEXL 1340. WSPD 1370. WPHM 1380. WDTK 1400. WSAM 1400 in certain areas. WMKM 1440. WHLS 1450. WFNT 1470. WWCK 1570. WHLX 1590. WAAM 1600. TIS X Band stations nearby.

Skywaves

WSB 750. WWL 870. Many Cubans, Mexicans, Central Americans.

There may be several wipe outs and recoveries before display.

WWKB 1520 Buffalo will be first to be heard on recovery before next wipe outs, usually better than almost all normal nights. This is because it refects off an ion cloud in the direction North of the array in the side lobe.

Then WLAC 1510. WCKY 1530. KXEL 1540. WFME 1560.

Look before recovery, during wipe outs. Conditions may approach normal Night conditions before the next skywave wipeout.

And it’s been said, “HD on AM will sound like FM” HD Radio is Broadcasting biggest failure. How can HD Radio 📻 on AM improve the band with all it’s interference issues from ground wave to skywave differences between day and night and electrical interference and the big broadcasters want to make AM totally digital, LMAO. It will never work on AM.

Aurora was wiping out WWV on 15 MHz and up and boosting signal on 2.5 and 5 MHz yeaterday. Ham bands above 30M were gone and signals on 80 and 160M were good. Could have been some back scatter signals on 12 and 10M but nobody else seems to be trying. maybe good on 6M too but I have no gear working there in my radio room.

I should have specified BCB, but its good to look at WWV/H 2500 kHz, CHU 3330 kHz, WWV/H 5000 kHz, CFRX 6070 kHz, CHU 7850 kHz, and WWV/H 10000 kHz.
