Anyone Observe WCXI Or WPON Testing Activity?

Anyone Observe WCXI Or WPON Testing Activity?

Post by CK-722 » Thu Feb 28, 2019 3:07 pm

Has anyone heard anything different on 1160 or 1460?

Something Nice To Say About WCXI 1160.

I was listening to Jimmy James on WCXI today. I was surprised at how good the Oldies Format really is. They seem to no longer be playing the really obscure Doo Wop and Rockabilly. That's OK for a special show. But I enjoyed the Jackson 5, The Monkees, and Orleans today. I kept coming back to see what they played next. Must Hear AM!

When I’m in Romeo I can’t hear neither WCXI or WPON.

Just tuned in 1160 and WCXI is booming in S9+ 20 dB. on the Yaesu FT990 using a 250 ft dipole antenna.
On 1460, just heard faint modulation with rapid fading into the S5 background noise. Probably WBRN Big Rapids, maybe the WKAM station in Northern Indiana too..
I am only a few miles from the new WPON towers.

I used to drive by the old WPON site on Benstein road at the western end of Wolverine lake. Today it's all full of houses .

I will hold fast to my long time prediction that the new facilities will NEVER get completed under current ownership. My guess is he either owes a lot of people money or there's a land dispute of some kind. Construction doesn't just stop for months on end after 70%+ of the work is complete for no reason.

The 1160 signal still didn't stop the scan in my car. My thought was that the North Road signal was back to full power, otherwise the signal from 15 1/2 and Charms Rd. would have stopped the scan. Particularly if they were using 3750 watts nondirectional for proofs. I should look to see what the signal would be if the conductivity was 0.1 mS/m for 30 miles. They could use Method of Moments, but then I think they would be using 15 kW full power directional. I tried to see what direction, WNW or WSW, it nulled out in, but there was so much electrical noise, I couldn't.

I was able to null out the WCXI signal, and the direction was consistent with the North Road facility. It's coming in better, and it's not particularly cold today, so maybe they have corrected any transmitter issues.

I wish the current WCXI format was on the original WCXI 1130 frequency so I could hear it down along the OH border.

Doesn't like the owner can afford the set up for HD for the station :D

Yes, :o today at 18:05 UT (14:05 local time) I hear WPON playing Motown oldies and a female announcer saying " WPON Walled Lake Michigan. Enjoy the music while we conduct tests and measurements" (announcements vary slightly).. Reading S9 +16 dB on the Yaesu FT990 radio's S meter using a 250 Ft dipole antenna up 35 ft.
Tuned down to 1160 and I hear WCXI ? playing rare oldies, sounds like a live format. The signal level there is a few dB higher, my antenna is slightly less efficient here.

I tuned 1470 and hear a pretty good signal , probably WFNT up in Flint ! "Cumulus has killed 1470 kHz" Not dead yet ?
Located 20.00 miles from WCXI towers and 5.33 miles from WPON new site. (according to GoogleEarth)

WFNT 1470 is owned by Townsquare. They may have fixed their transmitter, as I am getting it better too, for the last few days.

WTRX 1330 is owned by Cumulus. The WTRX signal is so buried in WEXL IBOC sidebands to the South, that I think they have to get Crawford to turn the WEXL IBOC off to do full proofs of performance, or at least critical radials. A few weeks ago, they were doing testing at WTRX, and were obviously running omni, and WEXL's IBOC was off at the same time. WTRX was booming into Romeo, in the direction of one null. At 5 PM the signal went DA and the WEXL IBOC was turned back on.

I have yet to hear WCXI coming from Charms Rd. Every time I have tuned in, the RCVR null has been consistent with the LIC North Rd. facility. I printed out the FCC Search facility, which has all azimuths and distances for AM stations within a radius. One of the ham callsign sites shows the coordinates associated with the ham license address. You might try that to verify. Right now, I'm using a Grundig S350 for the null direction. It's pretty deep in the direction of North Rd.

Is the WCXI WPON site off for the weekend yet? I'll check the direction in a few minutes to see where it's coming from. In the car, I noticed no difference in 1160, and 1460 was buried in CH interference.

Could they have both WCXI sites on? They did that sometimes when they put up the new WFDF array. I think they even switched to the G-4244 Bristol Rd./Howe Rd. site at Night to properly serve the Flint COL with a full (5 mV/m from Bristol and Howe Rd.) NIF contour before it was licensed to Farmington Hills. The first Day CP had a Flint COL, as the 5 mV Day contour encompassed (and still does), 100% of Flint, based on M-3. Made it by this much, as Don Adams would say. You could sometimes hear a faint ID from the other site under the stronger signal.

Oh. WEXL is now WCHB,

I looked up the RL coordinates on that neat new ham FCC site. Here are the distances and azimuths of nearby stations, less than 25 miles away.

WDEO 990 23.4 MILE@197.7 DEGREES.
WCAR 1090 18.7 MILE@162.2 DEGREES
WCXI 1160 CP 5.3 MILE@235.7 DEGREES
WCXI 1160 L 20.1 MILE@319.6 DEGREES
WDTW 1310 25.0 MILE@153.3 DEGREES
WCHB 1340 20.0 MILE@113.9 DEGREES
WDTK 1400 22.3 MILE@124.1 DEGREES
WMKM 1440 23.6 MILE@166.1 DEGREES
WPON 1460 CP 5.3 MILE@235.7 DEGREES
WSDS 1480 23.7 MILE@198.3 DEGREES

WCXI PREDICTED FI FROM LIC AND CP 1/4 POWER OMNI TEST SITE AT VARIOUS WHOLE PATH CONDUCTIVITY EQUIVALENTS

COMPUTED FROM FCC ENGLISH UNIT GROUNDWAVE GRAPHS AND ENGLISH UNIT THEORETICAL INVERSE FIELD VS. HEIGHT W/CORRECTION FOR ACTUAL GROUND SYSTEM VS PERFECT GROUND SYSTEM, AND FCC COMPUTED IDF PATTERNS

140 degrees true 1 kW LIC DA STD PATTERN
PATH 2 mS/m 20 miles 0.78 mV/m
PATH 4 mS/m 20 miles 1.632 mV/m
PATH 8 mS/m 20 miles 3.948 mV/m

56 degrees true 3.75 kW omni 82 degrees height CP OMNI CONTROL
PATH 2 mS/m 5.3 miles 3.75 kW omni 82 degrees electrical height 361 mV/m @ 1 mile 15.9 mV/m

How much longer before these two stations get on the air or not?
