Classic Country In The North

Northern Michigan (Crawford, Roscommon, Kalkaska, Otsego, etc) really needs a classic country station. The listeners of this area are not properly served by that format. When I mean "classic" I'm referring to 90's, 80's, and some 70's. I have said a million times here, we need a DUKE FM in the north!

So here are some tunes that would be nice to hear on the radio...

The Bellamy Brothers - Cowboy Beat
Eddy Raven - Sooner or Later
Brother Phelps - Let Go
Mike Reid - I'll Stop Loving You
Confederate Railroad - Daddy Never Was The Cadillac Kind
Rodney Crowell - Lovin' All Night
Sawyer Brown - The Race Is On
Sweethearts of the Rodeo - Midnight Girl/Sunset Town
The Kentucky Headhunters - Walk Softly on this Heart of Mine
Ricky Skaggs - Lovin' Only Me

Some of these would be suitable for line dancing, FYI... :rollin

Line dancing... that takes me back to third grade in 1996 LOL

I'm not a country fan, but doesn't WMKC reach Grayling?

WMKC is not a classic country station, not even close.

You are probably thinking of their low power sister station - an FM translator on 100.7 that rebroadcasts AM 1240 from Cheboygan.

Classic Country would be a logical choice up north, but here's how it would play out... The station would sound great. You would likely find business owners willing to buy spots, and play the station in their place of business. The minute the business owner leaves, his hayseed employees change the station back to WTCM.

The same problem existed in 1975. The only difference is, today, there are a LOT more stations.

I wish Blarney Stone in Grayling would have taken the classic country route rather than doing obscure "rock and roll".

Well, I did say I'm not a country fan... lol

Forgot WCBY is doing the classic country format.

A 90's and early 2K's centered country station that also sprinkles in some songs from prior decades would do relatively well up north and is a format Blarney Stone should strongly consider for 101.9.

101.9 is probably the only frequency where there would be any measure of success. I wouldn't attempt it without help from Tim Achterhoff.

Agreed. I would much rather have that than the obscure rock they currently play.

You should be able to hear WGDN-FM fairly decently in Roscommon County. I think WBMI out of West Branch reaches some of the area pretty well too. It would be nice to have a classics station covering the whole region though. I enjoy listening to the Saturday night syndicated classics show they air on WTCM and WATZ. 100.3 used to have a Sunday morning classics show as well during its Y100 days.

WGDN is spotty in Roscommon itself but might be better more closer to Houghton Lake. Something covering the whole region would be ideal. 100.3 would have been a great choice to do this. Back when they were country I listened to that way more than WTCM.

101.9 or 106.7 would be the best signals for this type of format, IMO.

Independently of 101.9 or 106.7/105.5, I think 94.9 in Scottville should go classic country. TCM kills it even in its backyard

I don't care what frequency on the dial it is, I want it to scream loud and proud in Grayling.
