Snowmageddon?

Post by bobhuge » Mon Jan 28, 2019 7:39 am

Was anyone NOT predicting today's ending of the world, or did all the forecasters fall in line to scare the crap out of every school and county office and wet the lips of every lawyer?

The roads are garbage in Metro Detroit because it's been snowing at least lightly non-stop since about 11a this morning and surfaces are very cold.

However, snow accumulations have been unimpressive down here. About 3 to 4 inches total in my neck of the woods. A heavier band of snow is rolling through right now (flakes are much bigger & wetter as temps are now in the upper 20's), but it looks like the snow will be done entirely here within the next hour.

It's going to be pothole & water main break Armageddon down here for the next six days. High temps of around -5 on Wednesday & Thursday will swing to highs above 40 degrees (!!!) by Sunday.

I live on a north/north south road in the middle of empty farm fields. roads are for the most part clear, because it just blew across it. I'd be surprised if we got more than 5 inches (I know, I know...that's what she said). It was cold enough the snow just kept moving, even the main state routes were in pretty good condition.

I guess I just didn't think it was all that bad in the Caro area, and certainly not worth shutting everything down 12-16 hours in advance.

Although, it was nice to have the roads to myself. :)

I use the NWS/NOAA website. I like it. It’s straightforward. No ads. It’s usually pretty accurate.

They forecasted 3” today, however they said snow at 7am. We all know how it played out. They, also (along with others) called for a “dusting” overnight Saturday into Sunday. I got 2.5”.

I’m finding the local TV stations are more alarmist in their forecasting, say as compared to 5 or 10 years ago. But, hey, the tv station’s prime directive is to hold viewership for as long as possible, so I don’t take ‘em to task. And TV meteorologists have long said it’s very difficult to predict snow amounts accurately.

Forecasts were spot on by 2 out of the 3 stations here in Flint and Saginaw. TV5 is the worst (unfortunately) when it comes to being over the top and alarmist in their presentation. That problem is a direct result of past and previous management and current Chief Met Bachman, who knows he won't get any backlash if he plays up the high end of the models/downplays the low end of the models. Not all the mets agree with his approach and want to take a more finessed approach at forecasting... but to no avail. And why should they... viewers keep rewarding TV5 with ratings.

Until viewers pick up the remote and switch to 25-66 or 12, TV5 will keep on trying to play on the fears.

Not sure it has much impact, though, on schools since most districts do independent analysis by driving bus routes before cancelling class.

Now bundle up... snowmagaddeon is being replaced by the deep freeze!

I'm guessing I got about 5" at my house in Ann Arbor. I shovel my own driveway and sidewalk so my guess is based on that.

We got maybe 4 or 5 inches here in novi.

The snow was fluffy though and easy to move around.
Was like walking in fluff. Was fun actually. Lol

Huron County got 8-10 inches and we might have another 3 inches by tomorrow morning. Not snowmageddon but not nothing.

The cold is brutal but we will be in the 40's Sunday and Monday. Some estimates are even high 40's.

All told, I have 10" in the middle of my yard. I know at least 2 of that came in the last two days.
