Dramatic Failure Of Leftism / Socialism in South America
http://www.latimes.com/world/mexico-ame ... story.html
Another stark example of why government should never be in business. When it fails it takes the country and it's leaders with it.
You can never take away human pride in creating something of your own. Once the government takes over the will-to-work is lost, and price controls can never bring that back.

Madman Mr. Maduro is being chased through the streets with people banging on pots and pans because they are hungry.

Kind of like all the privatization we have here? Amtrak, the post office etc? All losing money even though they said privatize it and watch it thrive? Our government is in business too... and Conservatives made it happen.audiophile wrote:http://www.latimes.com/world/mexico-ame ... story.html

It will either thrive or die.
Things that are currently operating at a large loss, would be difficult to operate privately.
I think the post office could possibility operate privately.

It does... it's a public corporation that bleeds red ink... it was a department which makes a hell of a lot more sense for its function...audiophile wrote:It will either thrive or die.

At least we have UPS and FEDEX - in Venezuela they would shut down any service that competed with it.
They also put price controls on everything.

Re: Dramatic Failure Of Leftism / Socialism in South America
It's interesting that you label it 'Leftism / Socialism'......
.....here in the US, the terms have become essentially interchangeable.
It's illustrated by the desire of some to have the government 'handle everything', as poorly as its track record is in doing so, mixed with 'group think' rules on what is, and what is not acceptable thinking, with those thinking differently from the group branded in some fashion......i.e. anyone having voted for Trump is a racist, sexist, etc.
More recently, at least in the last few years, and completing the general turn to socialism, is the turn against simple capitalism by leftists. Anyone who has worked, gambled, and succeeded is vilified as being somehow bad or wrong for doing so. They don't mind their piece of the pie increasing (i.e. minimum wage increases), and they all would welcome a winning lottery ticket for a quick flash-dance to the top of the heap, but anyone who used his money to build a business and succeeded is 'bad'.

The box that many broadcasters won’t look outside of was made in 1969 and hasn’t changed significantly since.

I think we should chip in and send Screen Stare to Venezuela permanently.
I don't think he will find any poppy cock (popcorn chicken) in the land of MADuro.

You're joking, right? BOTH the USPS and Amtrak are run by the government. You're out of mind.NS8401 wrote:Kind of like all the privatization we have here? Amtrak, the post office etc? Yes they are... as subsidized for profit corporations in Amtraks case or as an agency seeking to make a profit in the USPS's case. They report a profit or loss quarterly. It's a Republican concept. If they were fully run by the government (without a CEO and Board of Directors in Amtraks case) they would be departments not corporations or agencies. Departments don't report operating profits or losses.radiodoc wrote:You're joking, right? BOTH the USPS and Amtrak are run by the government. Re: Dramatic Failure Of Leftism / Socialism in South America
A Lille bit of facts for you:
"Amtrak is a federally-chartered corporation, with the Federal government as majority stockholder. The Board is appointed by the President of the United States and confirmed by the U.S. Senate, and Amtrak is operated as a for-profit company, rather than a public authority."
For profit doesn't mean private. Amtrak is completely run by the government and was created when rail services were essentially taken over by the government in 1970:
"Amtrak was created by Congress in 1970 to take over the passenger rail services previously required to be operated by private railroad companies in the United States. Those companies showed they had operated these services at a net loss of millions of dollars for many years. Operations began on May 1, 1971."
"Amtrak receives funding from 18 states and other entities under 19 operating agreements for financial support of 26 short-distance routes (less than 750 miles). Section 209 of the Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act (PRIIA) required Amtrak and its state partners to jointly develop a cost-sharing methodology to equitably charge states for state-supported intercity passenger rail service. The PRIIA 209 methodology became effective in October 2013.
Continued operation of these state-supported routes is subject to annual operating agreements and state legislative appropriations according to Section 209. Fueled by Amtrak's valued partnership with its state partners, state-supported routes carried nearly 14.7 million passengers in FY 2015."
USPS is not a government owned "corporation" like Amtrak, instead it's part of the Executive Branch of the government, CONTROLLED by Presidential appointees and the Postmaster General.
So you'd like to say that these essentially flailing government agencies are flailing because they're run like corporations which is a Republican idea? OH. OKAY.

Re: Dramatic Failure Of Leftism / Socialism in South America
First of all if you read what I wrote I said the one was a public corporation and the other was an agency run like a corporation. The question is what business either has in trying to make a profit... certainly sounds socialistic to me. Republicans have pushed for a profit for decades from both. But that tenor has only increased over time.radiodoc wrote:A Lille bit of facts for you:
