Q105 rebrands to a 90's and 2000's format

A place to go for those of you who wish to discuss happenings in OH, IN, IL, WI, and Ontario. OSU sucks, by the way.

Q105 rebrands to a 90's and 2000's format

Post by radioandtventhusiast » Mon Sep 04, 2023 12:44 pm

It looks like Q105 has flipped slightly to a more gold based format, playing mainly the hits of the 90's and 2000's, although some of today's hits are sprinkled in for good measure. This is different from when Q105 started where it was mainly a CHR with an occasional retro song, and a two hour show of nothing but 2k hits. I feel like this will be a better choice than continuing to rely on new hits in 2023, although I wonder how much damage it will do to Party 103.3, although who now long Party will still be around. I first noticed the change at midnight.

So it's basically The River minus 80's songs. Yawn.

Speaking of Potty 103.3, that piece of shit's officially made it for a whole year hasn't it?

Curious if this is a format shift or specialty weekend for Labor Day?

It's not quite the River as it contains some hip hop and some harder rock like Linkin Park.

Yes, Party debuted the Tuesday after Labor Day last year.

The way the imaging implies, I'm thinking this is a format shift. Their sister station in Dallas pulled a similar move earlier this year.

To be honest, I'd rather have a nostalgia format than an attempt that would never work to take on Kiss.

RadioInsight would call this "CHR/Gold." Similar to what B96 in Chicago is doing now.
Not quite a River clone. You won't be hearing Celine Dion or Rod Stewart here.

I'll check it out as soon as I head toward Ann Arbor again (I can get it here in Brighton but a lot of times it gets beat by WWCK or one of the million repeaters on the frequency). Sounds like something I MIGHT enjoy.

I suspect the station will get the same 2 or 2.5 share it always gets just because it's already been irrelevant for such a long time.

The format has proven to be a total dud in Dallas so far, although I will say 105.5's playlist looks more promising than that of KLIF-FM.

I like the music log so far, although playing some currents and recurrents on "Toledo's 90s and 2000s" station makes zero sense to me.

Same pukey imaging voice as WHTS in Grand Rapids. Yuck. I will say the cuts I've heard on WQQO at least sound better than the material I've heard on WHTS.

Interesting, I think it's a good move. I mean, what could they possibly lose? And I'll be honest, it's enough to get me to listen in the car. I could never figure out why they'd be Kiss FM light for so many years. It was never going to work. The most success that station ever saw was during its Star 105 2003-2006 Hot AC days taking the River's younger end, I think they cracked a 4.5 to 5 12+ share a few times and were incredibly competitive with W25-54.

Yawn. . . .No change to air talent. No digital mention of it. Music shift won't do much with a tainted station like q105. The Q105 brand is destroyed. Just a half assed attempt to put lipstick on a pig of a radio station.

For the love of Hades and Harrod! give it up. This is worse than Tower 98. To be honest, I'd rather see 105.5 sold to a religious group just to put this mess out of it's misery. Who knows? that might just happen.

So I gave the station a listen yesterday. I'm not sure why but I was expecting more of a Hot AC/Modern AC approach but most of what I heard was rap :x . Nope no thanks.

I'm surprised our fellow poster who was constantly railing against 105.5 over the summer hasn't dropped in to give his .02.
In any case, this doesn't sound like anything I'd be interested in. They might as well take 105.5 all sports on the main signal with the Ticket format. Doesn't look like that has a primary channel at the moment.

it's possible they do that when this format tweak also fails to move the needle. Of course no one listens to the Ticket either except for Buckeyes and to a lesser extent Browns games anymore, but being an ESPN Radio clearinghouse damn near 24/7 now makes it cheap to run.

I'd say that is likely where things are headed, they can twerk, tweak, and trim Q all they want but it's not going to make a can of baked beans difference. All I've been hearing since the tweak has been rap mostly and T-town needs another rap station just like it needs religion and country.

The Ticket would likely fare better on 105.5 but not by a lot. As Curly mentioned, it's dirt cheap to run ESPN 23 hours a day. Plus, stuff like school sports and maybe other brokered programs may be a better fit with sports, if that makes any sense.

With an election year coming up, they could flip 100.7 back to Talk radio. We shall see.

100.7 as a talk station would be very identical to WJR from 8 at night to 5 in the morning. Mark Levin, Matt Walsh, Ben Shapiro and Red Eye Radio would almost certainly air there. I don't know Cumulus's current shows right now that are syndicated talk.
