Canadian Numeris Radio Ratings - Fall 2021

Post by Marcus » Fri Dec 10, 2021 3:58 pm

I think I'll let the Windsor radio ratings speak for themselves this time. They are listed after London and before Sudbury. On both my home PC and the PC at my workplace they are on page 17.

Just out of curiosity, why aren't any Detroit stations included? Is there a rule against stations out of Canada not being allowed?

If I remember this correctly (I can't find anything to back me up) - Numeris (formerly BBM) is a non profit co owned by Canadian broadcasters and the government. I think as part of the agreement to create this entity, they decided to eliminate any non-Canadian radio. Which is clearly to their advantage based on "unpublished data" -
In an article titled "How CKLW Dominated American Music", the author wrote: Unpublished data from the Numeris rating firm shows Detroit stations continue to have significant listenership across the river. The total share of audience for Canadian-licensed stations in November 2019 accounted for only 49.8% of listening in the Windsor market (Windsor CTRL, 2019)

The only American station listed in Numeris' reports is WLYK, which is programmed by Rogers and serves the Kingston area:

WLYK is actually owned (47%) by Rogers Media directly.. with the majority being held by an American (James Oyster I think is the name) to make it fit FCC rules. Interesting pedigree and history of this station... reading some of the sales/joint sales paperwork in their public file.

I see blowing out 89x and the river is going gangbusters for them.

Even 93.9 is very low, for the Detroit/Windsor Metro. Including the US stations would show where the listeners are going. I find it hard to think they all are on 580 am. Also, with some duplification of formats, it would be interesting to see who Canadians prefer, to tell the Canadian broadcasters what to do for ears.

I mean, I AM reading correctly, right? They are not in order of rating, but I have to look at the actual share? 2.0 and 2.1?

89X's listeners went to WRIF; 93.9's went to a smattering of stations including 100.7 Cool FM.

I think it's one of the reasons why Numeris excludes US stations, especially in border markets such as Windsor -- so that the Canadian stations would look good on paper. Because the Windsor stations know that they're being creamed by Detroit and, in some cases, Toledo.

Correct. Look at the share %.

Correction: I said 580 above. I meant 800.

Oh, I see. They are listed by call letter. Okay. Yes, I see your point about CKLW.

Welp, considering those ratings, they need another country station and another pop station. That could only help. God knows the options are limited for those formats 🙄

93.9 made a terrible move by dumping its prior format.

The numbers for 88.7 are nearly a push, but those dummies flipped to the wrong format. They should've flipped to Adult Hits or Classic Hits instead. The station has been mismanaged for years, so the boneheaded format decision is not terribly surprising.

95.9 has not been hurt the tiniest bit by 88.7's change!

93.9 is eating into 96.7's numbers somewhat; 96.7 since rebranding as "Mix" years ago has always been a very lame sounding station in my view.

The Big 8, CKLW stilll top dog decades later in Windsor. Are there any ratings for Chatham-Kent? Curious to see how county is doing there vs the rest?

The most recent ratings I was able to find poking around were from Spring 2020, and posted on this very board by our moderator himself.

94.3 CKSY - 19.8 share
630/92.9 CFCO - 16.0 share
95.1 Cool FM - 15.3 share
99.1 CKXS - 7.7 share
