NFL Football on Toledo radio

A place to go for those of you who wish to discuss happenings in OH, IN, IL, WI, and Ontario. OSU sucks, by the way.

NFL Football on Toledo radio

Post by 80sTalkRadioFan » Fri Aug 13, 2021 10:24 pm

Noticed the Detroit Lions were no where to be found on Toledo radio for their first preseason game. Figured they would be on either 100.7 The Ticket or Nash Icon 98.3 Monroe/Toledo. Also checked the Lions radio affiliate list and no mention of any Toledo stations. The nearest to Toledo is either WTKA-am 1050 Ann Arbor, or WLEN-HD2 96.5 fm Adrian. Have not checked the Browns list yet, wonder if/where they'll be on the Toledo radio dial.

I noticed when listening to 100.7 recently that they promoted being the home of national NFL games but did NOT mention the Lions at all, this would be the first time in many, many years that the Lions haven't been on the Ticket, even when their flagship was WJR and made having a Toledo affiliate largely redundant, they were on 106.5.

Browns according to their website are on XKR this year, they've been irregularly on and off of Toledo radio for a while after being pushed off of IOT in 2006. XKR had them for a couple of years about 10 years ago, 107.7 also had them a little while after that, many years they haven't had a Toledo affiliate at all.

Noticed 94.5 XKR had the Browns first preseason game last night. There is probably more interest in the Browns than the Lions this year anyway. On a side note, Tunein has rights to stream all NFL radio broadcasts this year, after not having them last season. Not sure if they're free or require a Tunein premium subscription.

The past five or six seasons, the Lions' flagship had been Cumulus-owned 760 WJR.

Beginning this season, 97.1 The Ticket (Audacy) is once again flagship. My guess is the various Cumulus stations in the region that carried the Lions did so because it may have been a package deal. I am unsure of that, however.

That means there are now 0 Detroit teams on Toledo radio. Not that we're missing much.

1230 still had the Pistons as of last season, I believe. Hard to believe that they'd be the sole survivor.

You're right about the Pistons being on 1230 "The Gambler." Maybe they'll pick up the Lions for the regular season, since the Mudhens will be about done by then.

Browns released their affiliate list for 2022 on their website. Google drive link under https://www.clevelandbrowns.com/media/radio

No Toledo station is listed, although WFOB from Fostoria (or "Fostroit" as someone here called it once) is faintly audible here. Maybe it could change before the season, who knows.

Fostroit fits; Fostoria is one depressing shithole of a town.

I'm surprised to see they have an affiliate in Dayton; on FM no less.

They ought to have an affiliate or two in NW Ohio aside from a tiny AM in Fostoria.

Jamestown NY and Wheeling are more surprising than Dayton. Erie PA is split between Browns Steelers and Bills.

Anyone in Erie who roots for the Browns over the Steelers is ill.

Erie is somewhat infamous over the years for controversies involving whose games get broadcast there, since it's split between three teams all in the same conference. The Bills claim it as an official secondary market so all their road games get shown, but otherwise it's open season.

Dayton has some loyal Browns fans, but definitely has many more Bengles fans. I was reminded of that every week during the NFL season, back when I lived there. As for Toledo, it's hard for me to believe 100.7 The Ticket/94.5 XKR won't renew their contract to simulcast the Browns, as they did much of last season, especially since other than the Buckeyes, they really don't have much play by play, other than what they get nationally from Westwood One and ESPN Radio.

I remember having to depend on WFOB for some Ohio State basketball games back when I attended UT. This was in the days that WCWA was the Buckeye affiliate but Storm games often took precedence. That was a challenge, especially at night, but it was doable.
At the end of the day, for no NFL team to have an affiliate in Toledo is pretty poor. Yeah the Browns can be heard from WKNR and even the Bengals from WLW once the Reds are done, but that's not the point.

If broadcast radio wants to remain relevant, major league sports on a local is a good way. Also, some stations play "filler" online during a sportscast
