Impressive share for WISN

In the most recent ratings for Milwaukee, 1130 WISN managed to score a 12.7 share. That is the highest share of any station in any PPM market! Impressive for an AM with no FM translator: https://radioinsight.com/ratings/milwaukee/

I flip between them and WTMJ when I want to hear talk when in New Buffalo or Michigan City. Both are solid when they have local shows. The Chicago stations I can listen to every night and even during the day at times in Metro Detroit.

Glad Milwaukee still has a very healthy AM presence that Chicago and Detroit used to have and have lost (save for one AM in each market). WLS with shares of 1, likewise WJR going from double digit shares to 'has been' even during an election year.

It may help that the strip of land within about 40 miles of the Wisconsin Shore has good soil conductivity.

The West Michigan shoreline has very poor conductivity.

WISN has got to be - by far - the AM station with the best AQH share in the Top 50 markets.

WLW is probably second highest.

There is a null to the East to protect WCAR/WDFN. WDFN radiates a 50 kW equivalent IDF toward WISN, as it came on 1130 with 50 kW many years before WISN moved from 1150 to 1130 because you couldn't be 50 kW on 1150, and also they had to protect WJJD/WYLL to the South on 1160. The null also protects 1140 Kentwood, originally WKWM, which came on around 1979. So that blots out WISN around Grand Rapids.

WCAR/WDFN is also close to the 50 kW equivalent NIF toward WNEW/WBBR which is a Class I-B/Class A, as it was authorized before Critical Hours protection was required. A couple of years ago, people were saying that the DA was in severe disrepair, the land was worth more than the station, and they should downgrade and move, but that's a complicating factor.

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

I dare say a 250 watt traslator wouldn't have that much impact. 50 kW stations are better off hooking up with a suburban Class A if no Class B is available or suitable like WCFS Elmwood Park for WBBM. Also, many translators are limited to 99 watts in big cities because there are IF mixing problems, but since they had already authorized LPFMs at 100 watts on second adjacents, they came up with the 99 watts<100 watts solution.
