WPAY 1520 dealt to Fusion Radio

Post by Myron Falwell » Wed Nov 11, 2020 11:43 am

EMF finally dealt away WPAY 1520/92.1/103.3 after a decade, trading it to Fusion Radio in exchange for a Madison WI translator. It was an even swap of assets with no money changing hands.

Since K-Love Classics was shut down by EMF a few days ago, WPAY is running K-Love's Christmas feed as filler until the deal is consummated.

It's an upstart; it's anyone's guess.

I'm guessing it'll be a youth-oriented Christian Rock or Christian CHR format of some kind.

I think 730 would be more interesting for your experiment

Col Flagg, you may be right, 730 might be a better venue, but 1520 has nice new equipment is why I wanted that one. FWIW, the xmas music on AM1520 is better than 101.5 as far as the music library is concerned. I doubt Jimmy Swigart wants to unload 730, and I'm sure that it's a time warp going into that building, but then again, I like old stuff too.

Where is the 92.1 translator? I know there was a license for 10 watts, and a CP for 250 watts heavily directional from Oregon or Jerusalem Twp.

At one time (2017?), WSPD started using the 92.1 translator from K-Love, but with a power increase, you had a big mumbo jumbo in Oregon with it clashing with "the Wolf", and way too short-spaced from a full-power station on 92.1FM; I guess the plan would be to move it to the Oregon tower farms and only beam the signal westward with no eastward signal at all, if possible. What I don't understand is why WSPD tries to "hide" that they are on WRVF-HD2 with the legal ID buried at the TOH ID? Scott Sands plays music, which sounds pretty good in stereo on 101.5-HD2, so I don't understand why no promotion of WRVF-HD2 which sounds better than mono 92.9FM in Perrysburg. (They could use the analog AM stereo on the WSPD transmitter again and I could hear that in stereo if iHeart would allow their diminishing engineering group to use whatever mode that they want on their AM's.)

I was able to tune in 1520am and it seems now there airing an all 90s CCM format, I believe this is likely being done until the transaction closes. I've looked for information on the buyer but I've come up short of any information about them.

Will the new programing be some sort of foreign language or possibly some other boutique format?

Perhaps Urban Gospel (thus taking the frequency back to the format it had for most of the '90s as WVOI/WDMN)? I know it's not exactly a financial slam dunk since it tends to skew older, but it just seems odd that a market that has three hip-hop stations and an Urban AC doesn't also have a gospel station. It would be more interesting than talk/teaching or yet another CCM format anyway.

Gospel and Radio Rosary would take it back to it's Temperance Michigan/Perrysburg Township two-site plan programming 3 decades ago.

I wonder if The WPAY call letters were included in the sale?

I still hear the TOH ID as 1520 'WPAY Rossford" and 92.1FM

What's the latest info on WPAY? The new ownership should be up and running by now.
