Pirate?

Scanning the dial today and came across WJR being rebroadcast on 87.9 FM. It seems to be south of Toledo (northern Wood County?). Anyone know anything about it?

I don't think I can get it in Northwest Toledo.

It's most likely a pirate... 87.7 and 87.9 are notorious frequencies they use, being just below the "official" FM band and aside from two actual licensed LPFM stations in California, they're completely empty and unused (especially due to the severe adjacent-channel interference caused to any digital TV stations broadcasting on VHF 6)... if someone's broadcasting there, it's almost certainly a pirate broadcaster...

Now, there IS a possibility that it could just be someone's car-based or "whole house transmitter" for wireless FM reception, which *is* completely legal, but I'm doubtful that this is the case.

The Frankenstein VHF-TV CH6 analog audio in Chicago broadcasts "METV" and has higher ratings than 50KW WLS - go figure. Isn't CH6 TV audio used also in Cleveland?

Supposedly the Franken FMs will have to stop broadcasting soon.

My suspicion is that this is a Part 15 (more or less) transmitter for getting a signal all over a house and maybe yard. You can put your radio in an electrically more quiet place, and broadcast to an FM radio nearby. I remember a transmitter that broadcast Howard Stern for about a mile from a crowded apartment complex near a mall. If it's getting out a mile, then it probably is illegal.

IT was going several miles. I listened again this morning, but there wasn't a carrier on 87.9, so maybe it's just someone who pops on occasionally.

Cleveland permanently lost their license somewhat recently and has moved online. They had been off the air for some time on and off in the year before that, including when I was monitoring signals on the north shore of the lake last summer. So it's open over there now.

Is WJR that much a draw that someone would do that?
