WLEC changes formats and bumpers, seems to have gone Classic Hits

A place to go for those of you who wish to discuss happenings in OH, IN, IL, WI, and Ontario. OSU sucks, by the way.

WLEC changes formats and bumpers, seems to have gone Classic Hits

Post by innate-in-you » Mon Jun 22, 2020 8:18 pm

Driving home this afternoon, I was surprised to hear an ELO song, Johnny River's Secret Agent Man and America's Sister Golden Hair on WLEC, a complete shift in bumpers, and an announcer who is retiring.

The new sound almost borders on Classic Hits. First impression is that it resembles the old WHNE "Honeyradio 560" or Manistique's WTIQ before in flipped to Country.

I receive them on occasion here in Southgate. I’ll try to tune them in to hear the change.

Who's retiring from WLEC? And isn't their HD-2 the same as the HD-1 most of the time?

WLEC is an AM/FM translator combo in Sandusky. Are you perhaps thinking of WLEN in Adrian? (Their HD2 was the same as their HD1 until recently when they adopted a sports format on HD2 and the 96.5 translator.)

Mark Fogg is the WLEC personality who's retiring. He's been with the station since 1975.

Speaking of which, WCPZ-FM celebrated its 40th birthday about a month ago. (They were WLEC-FM for over two decades before that.)

Didn’t WCPZ 102.7 have a call letter change in the late 90’s as WMTX and then eventually went back to WCPZ.

You're correct. I think the WCPZ calls were temporarily moved to 100.9 in Clyde during that time.

Yes, then-owner Jacor transferred them up from Tampa at what is now WBTP 95.7 in a brand extension of what was WMVX 106.5 Cleveland.

When 104.9 Lorain adopted the KISS-FM brand as WAKS in September 1999, the WMTX calls were moved back to Tampa at the former WAKS 100.7.

Yet WCPZ is still Mix 102.7. Before they went to WMTX, was WCPZ Z102.7 or Z103?

FWIW, WLEC is using Westwood One's Good Time Oldies feed. The online playlist matches that on WCHY 97.7 FM in northern Michigan which uses the same format.

I wish they'd gone Soft AC with the WW1 format heard on 94.1/94.3 in Upper Michigan.

I remember listening to them on school trips to Cedar Point prior to the Mix rebranding and I'm pretty sure they were identifying with the call letters at that point. But I could be wrong.
